Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1648-1695) wrote her most famous prose work, La Respuesta a Sor Filotea, in 1691 in response to her bishop's injunction against her intellectual pursuits. A passionate and subversive defense of the rights of women to study, to teach, and to write, it predates by almost a century and a half serious writings on any continent about the position and education of women. Moreover, notes Ilan Stavans in his introduction, it has become "a cornerstone of Hispanic-American identity ... at once a chronicle of the tense gender relations in the Western Hemisphere, a rich portrait of the social behavior that prevailed more than a century before independence from Spain was gained in 1810, and the very first intellectual autobiography written by a criolla in a hemisphere known for its solipsism, introversion, and allergy to public confessions. A superb introduction to a great mind

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz is one of those remarkable literary figures whose extraordinary body of work forces one to either reevaluate or refine one's ideas about the complex interrelationships between religion, gender, national identity, and ethnicity. A nun who lived in seventeenth century Mexico, she distinguished herself as a poet, playwright, and prose writer.
"Poems, Protest, and a Dream" is an excellent introduction to the life and work of this fascinating woman. This selection of her works includes her famous prose piece addressed to "Sor Filotea de la Cruz," a hearty helping of her poetry, and two selections from her dramatic corpus. The bilingual format of the text, with Sor Juana's Spanish original on each even-numbered page and Margaret Sayers Peden's elegant English translation on each odd-numbered page, allows one to easily compare the two versions.
The distinguished scholar Ilan Stavans has written an extensive 32 page introduction. Stavans describes in detail the historical and cultural context from which Sor Juana wrote; his sensitive and intelligent portrait of the woman and her age made me appreciate and enjoy her writings even more.
Sor Juana takes on themes that are still relevant (and often hotly debated) more than three centuries after she wrote these works. The response to Sor Filotea is a defense of female intellectual aspiration in a male-dominated culture; in the defense Sor Juana critically responds to those who use the Judeo-Christian Bible as a tool for intimidating and marginalizing women. With certain factions of the "religious right" still using the Bible as a weapon for demonizing certain individuals and social agendas, Sor Juana's words continue to ring fresh and clear.
Equally extraordinary is Sor Juana's loa (a dramatic scene which prefaces a longer play) to "The Divine Narcissus." The loa is an allegory depicting the early contact between Christianity and the religion of the Aztecs; in this piece I detect a subtle satirical thrust which adds to the complexity of Sor Juana's vision.
Sor Juana was a masterful stylist in multiple literary genres, and her depth of psychological and moral insight adds to her stature as a literary giant. Nobody should consider herself or himself literate in the fields of women's studies or Latin American studies without having read the works of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. "Poems, Protest, and a Dream" is an excellent resource for both independent reading and classroom use. Enjoy Sor Juana's artistry, and reflect on her ideas.

Female Intellectualism

A great intellectual is not commonly thought of to be a woman, especially in 17th century New Spain. In the midst of the highly structured Baroque literary period, an illegitimate child was baptized as Juana Ram�rez de Asbaje, spent her adolescence at court, and left to become a nun where she could continue her studies in peace, rather than marrying. Although she was almost entirely self-educated, the word quickly spread of her intelligence. This caused envy and animosity towards her that she tried to avoid her entire adult life. Four years before she died, the church forced her to give up her writings and worldly studies. In her letter of response to this request, (included in the book) she became the first woman in Latin America to defend her gender's right to study and write as men could. Much of her work was commissioned, but more is being discovered of her autobiographical writings. This book includes one of the few known poems (Primero Sue�o) that was not commissioned. The book is in Spanish and English on opposing pages. This is very advantageous if you are bilingual, and even if you aren't, I can't say enough about Margaret Sayers Peden's translations. Not only does she give you as close to word for word; she also preserves the original structure, themes, and rhyme schemes that are so essential in Baroque literature. Even if you go no further than this book, you will not be disappointed. It has a very complete collection of her most famous works. Unfortunately, so few people in the English-speaking U.S. has even heard of Sor Juana In�s de la Cruz. I was first introduced to her wonderful poetry in a Mexican History / English dyad in college. Since that first poem I read, I have been searching for books of her works, and about her life. I highly recommend the addiction.

Goodall (My Life with Chimpanzees; Reason for Hope) and Bekoff, a biology professor at the Univ. of Colorado, offer a prescriptive conservation plan designed to protect animals as well as help educate people about the importance of saving both animals and the environment. The authors, who have also worked on Roots & Shoots, an international service program for young people, explain their position by including personal recollections and statistical evidence. Their position that people have chosen to destroy both animals and habitats and will continue to do so unless they radically change their behavior is stressed throughout the book: "It is sad to have to put a monetary value on the wilderness and on animal species. But until the wealthy nations can agree to pay an annual `rent' on huge areas of land, it seems likely that governments in the developing world will exploit their natural resources in any way they can...." The steps to action, including "Praise and Help Those Who Work For Animals and the Natural World" and "Value and Help Preserve the Sounds of Nature," are sound. For example, having children work with animal protection programs has already been successfully tried. Suggesting that kids "adopt" animal programs by making monetary donations is also practical. The book is particularly likely to interest people already active in environmental causes.

Adult/High School-Hiking through the mountains of Colorado, Bekoff found inspiration for a series of exhortations that he and Goodall believe would drastically improve all animal life (humans included) if enough people took action. Among the 10 trusts are "Rejoice that we are part of the animal kingdom"; "Refrain from harming life in order to learn about it"; and "Have the courage of our convictions." A blend of anecdotes and scientific data illustrates why each trust is important. Informal in style, the book leisurely goes back and forth between authors, creating a conversational feel that works nicely. Plenty of primate stories from Goodall are intermingled with dog tales from canine-loving Bekoff. Particularly riveting are his accounts of his personal involvement with animal experiments. Along with what is cited in the text, the section on sources includes more than a dozen pages of books, articles, and Web sites. Here, readers who are already familiar with animal-rights issues will find fuel for their fire, and those who are not are likely to experience an awakening. Without a doubt, Goodall and Bekoff are very good at tugging at the heartstrings while feeding the mind. Eco-warriors will adore this one.

This inspiring book brings together two notables of the animal welfare movement-primatologist Goodall and animal behaviorist Bekoff, who coedited the Encyclopedia of Animal Rights and Animal Welfare-for the first and, one hopes, not the last time. The result of their labor is a gift to those who care about the environment, animals, and people. How many readers have thought, "I care about environmental issues, but what can I do? My contribution would be a drop in the bucket." The authors answer that questions with their ten trusts, e.g., "Teach our children to respect and love nature" and "Praise and help those who work for animals and the natural world," which one can use as a personal action plan. Good heart, tiresome follow thru

There are various books that provide an animal friendly approach and oppose the usual bad things -- misuse, disrespect and so forth -- and this is somewhat sadly not as good as many of them. The book clearly is written by a pair deeply caring of animals who are heroes for their work. But, after a while, it was (I speak here btw as a vegetarian that agrees with their basic message) "okay already! you are laying it on too thick." Also, at times, it seemed more emotional than fact based -- certain anthropomorphizing (worms "wanting" something?) or (not helped by lack of direct notes) certain facts not clearly backed up. And, it also got repetitive, two of the trusts alone basically overlapping at least. Either best to be skimmed or condensed with excerpts. The basic idea (with examples) could have been done 1/2 the length. The duo authorship with italics to insert comments by Marc Bekoff, however, worked well. That was a good device.

Rebuilding Our Ethics Through Trust

Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Marc Bekoff have compiled ideas, stories, experience and much more about living a humane and ethical life into a book accessible to all. As the animal protection community has done for 50 years, this book shows that humans must respect the environment and all life if we, as a species, expect to survive. It is a very simple premise yet humanity has yet to catch on. The Ten Trusts not only gives us a path to follow, but it shows how others have acted before in trying to alter destructive patterns. Caring for others (animals, humans and nature) is not something radical, it is - humane! It is something everyone must do.
Goodall and Bekoff share their experiences from living a life of compassion and a boundless ethic. Few people are as well known and respected as Jane Goodall, but she has never rested on her fame. Instead, she stepped away from her field research and beloved friends in Gombe National Park, not to build monetary wealth, but to share her wealth of knowledge with young and old alike through lectures and programs such as Roots and Shoots. While Bekoff has spent years educating a more humane youth at the University of Colorado, all while helping us to better understand and appreciate animal behavior.
Over the last two years the Bush administration has systematically deconstructed even basic protections for the environment in order to please corporate greed. The Ten Trusts talks about many issues, one of which will certainly reappear following recent elections, is the drilling for oil in Alaska's ANWR. Even though the American public is opposed to destroying the last pristine environment, the Administration hopes to lull us into a belief that it is needed.
This does not have to be. Goodall, who revolutionized how humans think about other species through her work with chimpanzees and Bekoff, who is a leader in showing us that the minds of animals are as unique and complex as ours, have concisely gathered a wonderful set of ethics into an easily readable book. A book that everyone should read because it shows how we really can and MUST be compassionate.

A moving, enlightening, reaffirming book.

This is a wonderful book, filled with information and perspectives from which everyone will benefit. I recommend this book to "the converted" as well as to those who are unsure what all the vegetarians and animal-rights people are going on about. It's not a preachy book and it's not purely for animal lovers or "tree-huggers" -- it's a book for any human who cares (even slightly) about how his or her life affects other lives--the life of the planet and the lives of the animals (including humans) who live on it. I cannot imagine anyone who could read this book and not be affected by it. It's also very encouraging to read about the success of Ms. Goodall's Roots & Shoots program -- hopefully, the generations touched by her knowledge will do a better job than we have.

A book you can actually put into action

I feel like 99% of self-help books, be it self-help in work, love, friendships, what have you, are useless. They always have fluff chapters of 'act motivated and be motivated!' or 'think like a winner!' and various platitudes of that nature. You wind up finishing the book and realizing you read nothing but pseudo-motivational dribble that will wind up having zero impact on whatever you were looking to improve upon.

Enter 'SPIN Selling' - this book delivers where all of those other books have failed. In this book is a solid layout of how you should structure your sales calls, and not only that, but data to back up their claims and examples to on how to lead. Read this book, take notes, and I guarantee if you weren't already aware of how to sell in this style, your selling WILL improve.

I'm a novice to sales. Last year when I was interviewing for a sales position I was asked to put together a sales presentation and to sell a product. I was given the product brochure and 1 day to come up with something. Using 'SPIN Selling' as my guide, I put together a list of ideas and pitched them in my presentation. My interviewer was blown away. After I got the job, my manager told me he had never had someone deliver such a good presentation - everyone always focuses on selling the product, but they never try and sell the customer. Taking a note from this book, I asked the questions I needed to ask, developed them into problems for the buyer, and then walked them through the solution with their own words. It was a total and complete win.

I was tempted to give this book 4 stars because it really does falter in a few areas. For one, some of the research is tenuous at best -

A work of love -- one of the great living painters

I first discovered Hardwicke-Olivieri's work (Catamount) at the New Britain Museum of American Art. The painting astonished me, and I was delighted when I returned with my girlfriend (to whom I had said nothing of the painting) and watched her discover this piece on her own and stand spellbound for the better part of an hour as we discussed it. I have since gone on to explore this painter's work online and in her earlier book by David Pagel.

Closer to Wildness is a masterpiece: filled with details of her paintings it allows me to get close enough to see what the paintings actually look like. Hardwicke's work rewards those with patience as it is often filled with glimpses of many worlds in the small vignettes surrounding or intermingling with the main subject. The tracery of tattoo like writing is often legible in the detailed reproductions. The text allows the artist to talk to us about her thoughts on these paintings.

As I show this book to others I find that her appeal is nearly universal. Personally, I love her artistic mastery of scale, paint, drawing, color, and ability to coordinate themes and motifs within a larger piece with the mastery of a great composer. As an artist I wasn't sure if others would appreciate this genius -- but I am thrilled that her work seems to speak to all, whether they share her particular fascinations or not. Her work compels awe, respect, and love.

Intriguing historical accounts provide the context for current events - a great choice for everyone wishing to be well informed. This is a timely text that manages to remain neutral on a controversial topic while still providing plenty of very readable content. Whatever your stance on the death penalty, this is a must read.

Publication of this thought-provoking and challenging account could not have been timelier given the recent headlines reporting the “horrific” execution of Clayton Lockett in Oklahoma. The book questions the legitimacy of capital punishment in the United States given a 3 to 7 percent rate of gruesomely botched executions. It carefully records the various complications experienced with executions whether by hanging, electrocution, gas or lethal injection, and emphasizes that botched executions have accompanies each supposed technological “enhancement” to method. Anyone contemplating the future of the death penalty in our changing times should read Sarat’s book and ask themselves if it is ever acceptable for a society to risk the gruesome spectacle of a botched execution.

Voyeuer in death

No book can adequately express the horror of state sanctioned killing. This book tries but pictures are worth a 1000 words and for the squeamish there are none. What is here is a fascinating and scholarly approach to our barbaric customs and rituals.

The author explains that the rituals are of recent origin starting in the middle of the 19th Century. The middle class was first coming in to its own and sought to demonstrate a moral superiority over the lower classes by distinguishing themselves from the "common mob". A bit too...

I've read all of British author S J Parris' previous Giordano Bruno novels and rated them as 5 star reads. I was a bit hesitant to give "Conspiracy" five stars and am, in fact, rating it at 4 stars. The reason: it's too long and too complicated. But Parris's books usually ARE long and intricate looks at the Elizabethan England reflected through Giordano Bruno's service to Francis Walsingham, the queen's spymaster. This one is too much "long" and "complicated".

"Conspiracy" is set in Paris at the court of King Henry III and his mother, Catherine de'Medici in 1585. Giordano is on the run and has settled fitfully in Paris. He was hoping for a spying job from Walsingham back in London, but is basically biding his time, while also trying to obtain a lifting of his excommunication from the Vatican. He contacts an old frenemy who is involved in the turmoil between King Henry and his cousin, Henry, Duke of Guise. The Duke is working to dislodge is cousin, Henry, from the throne. (Henry, the king, has some rather strange personal habits...). Paris is slowly simmering in the hot summer of 1585, with religious and political contretemps between the various court and religious factions. (The St Bartholomew's Massacre of Huguenots in 1572 was still fresh in the minds of both Catholic and Protestant French, 13 years later.) And it is into this mess that Giordano Bruno has wandered.

As with many historical mysteries, many people aren't who they purport to be, either to other characters or to the readers. In "Conspiracy", Parris wanders around the hot city of Paris, in and out of the Louvre, in and out of churches, with a stop in a dungeon. I think if you're a regular reader of the series, you'll want to read the book, but if you're a new reader, don't pick it up. Read one of the earlier ones, instead.

Parris continues to write amazing well researched historical novels

S.J.Parris continues to write amazing well researched historical novels. Her hero, Giordano Bruno, is very believable and likable. The intrigues of the period she writes about are threaded through with characters that bring the stories to life and have the reader guessing to the last page the outcomes. I also like the way she drops little suggestions of future relationships and adventures which makes the reader eager for the next book.
In fact I can't wait.

A New Inductive Way of Teaching Science!

This is the third of three new books on Astronomy that teach the subject using inductive teaching methods. The clarity of the approach helped me see connections I had never noticed before. After taking this course I woke up in the middle of the night and noticed the moon was rising in the East. It was a waning quarter moon, so I figured from its position that the sun would be rising in about three hours. Later in the morning I noticed that two planets were now rising in the East. Though I knew they were probably Jupiter and Venus, a quick look at my HELI-O-MATIC Planet Finder from Falling Apple confirmed that fact. I want to personally thank Falling Apple for designing this course. It works just as well for older folks like me as I am sure it does for the young! This is a whole new way of introducing the subject of Astronomy and teaching science in general.

I would like to give my hearty recommendation for Tracy Lorenz's My Daddy is a Pilot. The text and photo illustrations are clear and inviting. The intended audience appears to be preschooler through early elementary, although some adults would learn a thing or two about the job of being an airline pilot and the basic terminology used in the industry. I probably should mention that my father was an Air Force pilot and I only wish I had a book like this when I was a youngster. It would have given me a much better idea of what Dad was doing when he was at work. Again, I highly recommend this informative book for young children.

Finally a book for real estate agents that really adds value to our business!

I've been selling real estate for 20 years. During this time, I've rarely come across a book written for real estate agents that actually adds value to how I market myself and my business. Agent Mail however is different. It's different because it doesn't try to cover all aspects of marketing. It's specific. Focusing on direct mail for real estate agents. With the ever growing 'do not call' list and 'no junk mail' stickers on letterboxes, direct mail offers a viable alternative to traditional methods of prospecting. The author has done a great job to not only make a case for direct mail, but to detail exactly how to go about it. I also like the fact that it's not long winded. No fluff here. Just a step by step set of instructions to get your letters opened and responded to. Do yourself a favour and buy this book. Like me, you'll be glad you did.
