Good overview of FinTech

This book is a good overview of UK/EU FinTech with a very limited coverage of the US FinTech. It is focused mostly on banking, payments, money transfer and insurance, but it pays very limited attention to the next huge sector to disrupt - wealth management.

Everything you need to know about FinTech in one book !

The FinTech book is a compilation of visionaries, experts and contributing authors on the FinTech Revolution. It's being called a "revolution" because financial technology will greatly impact the global economy as well as our personal lives. Financial inclusion for example will enable to "unbanked" to become part of the global economy by using their mobile phones or smartphones. "Bitcoin" cryptocurrency will provide an alternative to existing currencies and "Blockchain" (distributed ledger) will make the need for central authorities or clearing houses obsolete and at the same time reduce transactional costs to a fraction of the current systems in place. All these FinTech advancements will lead to a more efficient and transparent financial system around the world to the benefit of consumers, businesses and governments alike. FinTech will displace traditional legacy banking and brokerages with a more advanced system for financial transactions while at the same time reducing a costs and increasing efficiencies. This book covers all the above topics and gives great insights into the disruptive forces of FinTech coming our way.

Great aggregation of writers from consultants, startup founders, fintech hub reps. Most of the commentary is very general but the references allow for a much further deep dive. Great work from the authors .

About the Author

Steven D. Levitt, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago, was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, given to the most influential American economist under forty. He is also a founder of The Greatest Good, which applies Freakonomics-style thinking to business and philanthropy.

Stephen J. Dubner is an award-winning author, journalist, and radio and TV personality. He quit his first career—as an almost rock star—to become a writer. He has since taught English at Columbia, worked for The New York Times, and published three non-Freakonomics books.

Freakonomics / Super Freakonomics shows you how the world works. Think Like A Freak shows you how to better live in the world.

If you're a fan of Freakonomics and Super Freakonomics, you'll love this book. Here's why:

Like many other people, after reading both of the Freakonomics books, I felt like I learned a ton, but I wasn't sure how it would apply directly to my life.

And that's okay. They weren't writing a self help book, and I read their work because I was genuinely curious in understanding how the world works.

But this book departs from their usual method of explaining how the world works and instead shows you how you can better live in the world.

And that's why I believe this is their best book yet.

Here's a little summary of what I learned:

1. In one chapter, the three hardest words in the english language, they talk about one of the main problems that plagues people today - the inability to say "I don't know." And they show you how it's a deadly combination because "cocky plus wrong" is a recipe for disaster. They then show you how to avoid making this mistake. They even give a word for word script you can use.

2. In another chapter, "WHat's your problem," they share the story of Kobayashi and how he became a professional hot dog - and food eater. They walked through his entire process and how he went on to eat 50 hot dogs when people thought eating 30 was impossible. And even though they're talking about hot dogs, you'll see how this can apply to everyone.

As an example, back when I started creating videos for Social Triggers TV, a friend of mine told me they were filming about 6 videos a day. And I thought, "Well, I'm new at this ther's no way ill get there." And I would film 3 videos a day. Eventually, as I got good, I got to the magic number - 6 videos in a day and I felt like I was on top of the world. Until I spoke to another friend who told me they do 15 or 20 videos in a day. I was SHOCKED. But I went back to the drawing board, refined my process, and eventually got up to 17 videos in a day.

I'm being vague here, mainly because I want you to read the book. But it's funny seeing how the same process I used to increase my video production was used by the hot dog champ as well.

3. And my favorite part of the book is when they talk about what they call "the once and done" technique. If you're a non-profit, you'll LOVE reading about this because you'll see how you can potentially increase donations a drastic amount by using this simple marketing tactic.

And that's it.

Great book and I suggest you buy it and read it.

Are you willing to start thinking like a freak? A great book for approaching life in a creative way.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading this book. The way that the writers can intertwine different stories to make valid points is remarkable. It really does a good job of proving by observation how some things in life seem irrational, but ultimately make a lot of sense.

The only problems that I have with the book are the length, just over 200 pages, and it rehashes a lot of stuff that they go over in other works. This book is easy enough that you can probably read in one or two sittings and it is very captivating throughout. I really enjoyed the anecdotes they use to bring across the point of the book that everyone can benefit by thinking differently about the world (i.e. think like a freak).

One of the main things that I liked is how they describe the way children ask questions and are so curious about everything. Children don't have a set worldview and are eager to learn by asking a lot of questions. Parents often dismiss these questions when it might be valuable to see the world through a child's eyes and challenge set it stone opinions or thoughts.

The writers also make a good point about how the three hardest words in the English language are "I don't know" and how it should be okay to say these words. By applying these words to our lives, we will first of all lie a lot less and more importantly be able to demonstrate a willingness to find out answers to questions we simply don't know.

As I stated before, I wish that this book was longer, but I really did enjoy all that was written and would recommend "Think like a Freak" for those interested in challenging their current worldview and seeking to approach life in a creative way.

Makes sense--not so freaky

The title is to link it to their previous books, Freakonomics and Superfreakonomics. I'm not sure of the spelling there; I had not read the books. I read this only because it was the book selected by the ESL Junior College teacher to be discussed with an outside group (my group--a retirement center.) Written in a breezy style with lots of references to situations you will remember and recognize, it is a quick read that held my attention from the first page although, hating the title, I read it reluctantly. I think you will enjoy the time you spend with this book.

Great companion for the movie

My 6 year old daughter LOOOOOVES the Sharkboy and Lavagirl movie so it only made sense to get her the book. As expected, she loves it too. It follows the movie almost exactly. Very entertaining (a bit weird--just like the movie) but full of very creative and imaginative characters and scenes. I think any kid will love this book.

Shark Boy Lava Girl Book is loved by my grandson

My grandson, who is 3 1/2 has watched this movie over and over at our home during his visits. I had a difficult time finding anything related to his favorite movie. When I found the book I was thrilled, it has great illustrations and we read it together. I would recommend it to anyone who has a child that loves to read, especially the dream journal of Max.

Longer than DJ Heart's usual. Very hot:)

I like the sort of twisted, dubcon-ish relationships DJ heart writes. This was the longest book I have read by Heart, and it had more of a story than is usual. It features Grant and his omega Noah, who are married, and Derek, an alpha they are bringing into their relationship. Grant is not very sensitive or thoughtful, and a little bit of a bully. Derek, on the other hand, is very nice. Noah is the typical sweet omega who doesn't know how pretty he is.

So I thought Grant didn't redeem himself enough, but the sex was hot and I really liked Derek and Noah. Almost gave it four stars, but in the end I enjoyed it.

Equal parts good and bad

OK, so even from the very first page, there was so much that was just wrong with this story. Alpha Grant Hunter is at a party with his omega husband, Noah. Grant is one side of the room watching Noah swaying & gripping the bar for balance because “he’d obviously exceeded his 2 drink allowance” (Problem #1). While standing by the bar, “he smiled up at the alpha who obviously didn’t know he was taken” (Problem #2). “If he’d just wear a collar like a normal omega…” (a disobedient omega, Problem #3). All of this was just on the first page! And then to know that the whole ballroom had gone silent because they saw what was going on, which means that Grant has been publicly embarrassed by his omega (Problem #4). After they get home, the story mentions how Noah would often push boundaries just to see how angry Grant would get or how bad the punishments would be. Am I reading this wrong, or is this an exceedingly childish man who’s clearly not ready to be in any type of committed relationship, let alone marriage? 2 weeks after the party, Grant’s sister asked if he’d be filing for divorce.

The way the author writes the characters is what’s the problem. Noah is annoyingly immature, and I think part of that immaturity is never speaking up about being too sore or tired for sex. He hardly ever speaks up for himself, even though Grant has proven that he’s not going to punish him harshly. Grant thinks Noah’s too good for him (that couldn’t be more wrong), and vice-versa. Grant thought it would be a good idea to bring a younger alpha into the relationship, assumingly as a benefit to Noah, but it made no sense to me. There was not really a good reason, and the relationship between Grant & Noah was on thin ice as it was. Grant was a hothead who tended to fly off the handle first and ask questions later, but I think a lot of it was him being so strongly influenced by his family’s thoughts and wishes. Derek was just a good guy mediator-type who was dragged into the middle of this mess. Even though it never went through, I was glad that Noah went and got those divorce papers. It was the catalyst needed to force Grant to set things right. The story isn’t badly written, I just think that we (the readers) were brought into this just as the s**t was about to hit the proverbial fan.

Other problems: 1) Editing was terrible. Typos/misspellings, punctuation, capitalization. If I saw the word “chose” in place of “choose” 1 more time I was gonna scream. Plus in the beginning it said Grant was 6 ft tall. Later it said Derek was 6 ft 3 inches but still shorter than Grant. 2) Noah had petitioned the courts to become independent. Why? Also, in every other shifter story I’ve ever read, a lone wolf would not be permitted, and would be killed immediately with no forethought. 3) For such a supposedly intimidating alpha, why was Grant so freaking manhandled by his mother and sister? And I think the attorney lied, I think that prenup was put together by his mother & sister. 4) The thing with knotting Noah's throat, and then massaging his neck, causing him to choke and gag? Yeah, that's kinda not sexy. Not into asphyxiation, sorry.

Really good read

Noah struggles with trying to figure out how long he has before his Alpha tosses him aside. While grant brings in another alpha into there relationship because he fears he is to old for Noah. This book was a good read and I really liked how much Derek was there for Noah and showed him how much he loved him

A Refreshing Look at Storytelling

Martin launches his book with the premise that thousands of stories are being written with "something lacking." The writer labors, but fails to grab the attention of the reader. In this book, he asks whether good storytelling can be "taught."

What he succeeds in doing, admirably, is not only describing some of the elements of good storytelling, but describing them in such a way as to model good storytelling in the very act of explaining it. In short, this book is wonderfully readable. I have stacks of books on my shelf, waiting to be read -- but when I picked up this one I wanted to keep going until I finished it.

Martin breaks down the topic of storytelling into three basic sections: Eccentricity, Details, and Surprises. Each section is satisfyingly complete, and packed with examples from favorite stories, classic novels, and some less well-known sources. Throughout the book, Martin weaves in a parable to keep the reader "hooked" on a growing story that serves as an example of the techniques being described.

The tips here aren't new or groundbreaking. We've all heard that "less is more," and that knowing what to leave out of your story is just as important as what to put in. What works here is the style in which the material is delivered. Too many books on "how to write a story" are dry, pedantic and dull -- delivered like lectures to a group of drowsy students. Others illustrate their text with examples drawn entirely from their own works -- which is great if you think their work is brilliant but not so great if you don't.

Thus, for a book on "how to write well" to work, it must itself be written well -- and in such a way as to encourage you to read it. In this, How to Write Your Best Story is a success, and an enjoyable addition to any fiction writer's bookshelf.

Great Book!

Phillip Martin has edited several of my books, so I know that he is a great editor. Now, having read How to Write Your Best Story, I can say that he is a great writer, too.

This is a gem of a book--a must read for anyone who has written or wishes to craft the "best story" possible. Toward the end of the book, Phillip refers to a work by nature writer Barry Lopez, who define isumataq, the Inuit word for "storyteller," as follows: "the person who creates the atmosphere in which wisdom reveals itself."

This summarizes the tone and insight of this wonderful little book. It is just one of the many words of wisdom in which Phillip Martin weaves a story about how to better write and simply enjoy our own stories.

About the Author

Sergei Korsun is the chief specialist in the department of America at the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in St. Petersburg, Russia. Lydia Black was an American anthropologist and historian. She was a professor at the University of Alaska and an employee of the St. Herman Orthodox Theological Seminary. She�was the recipient of the Order of Friendship Medal form the Russian Federation and the author of several books, including The Journals of Iakov Netsvetov: The Yukon Years, 1845–1863, Russians in Alaska, 1732–1867, and Russians in Tlingit America.�Born in Kiev, Ukraine, she spent much of her�life in�Alaska. Daniel Marshall is the rector of the Holy Protection of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Goshen, Indiana. A Russian-language translator, he is also the author of St. Seraphim's Beatitudes: Blessings for Our Path to Heaven. He lives in Middlebury, Indiana.

A disappointing introduction to an absorbing man

Sergei Korsun's biography of Herman of Alaska, realistically the only true English language biography of the great saint, is an interesting start to the life of a fascinating man but overall falls through as a work of history.

Before I begin my criticism, I first want to acknowledge what Korsun does right. He shines some light on Herman's early life certainly before the Alaskan mission and even before his life as a monk. Korsun's research is spot on, and his passion for his subject is tangible throughout the book. Enthusiasm and solid research are usually the beginning of a great history book, but unfortunately this is where things stop.

The first thing that strikes the reader is how absolutely bland Korsun's writing style is. Now this can be a product of bad translation (the original book is apparently in Russian) but something tells me even the best translator couldn't make up for this weakness. At some points the book reads almost like a chronology: "Herman did x y and z in 1802. In 1804 he did x" and so on. This obviously makes for some less than exciting reading, which can be tolerated in academic writing, but Korsun is just bland beyond what I thought was possible.

Next, it seems like much of the book is just reproductions of various letters and correspondence between the Russian missionaries and the secular authorities of the Russian American Company. Literally, for pages and pages, a long letter will be printed in lieu of a narrative. This again could be forgiven if most of these letters were from Herman, but it seems like maybe only a quarter actually are. Combined with the author's habit of either totally ignoring Herman for dozens of pages or addressing topics that barely pertain to the subject (mythical Novgorodians in Alaska?), I believe its safe to say the author's writing style is simply lazy.

Korsun claims to be writing a historical, not hagiographical life of Herman, but his actual writing fails to demonstrate this. I've read the official, Church sanctioned hagiography of Herman and this book, and honestly I can say there isn't much of a difference. I understand this is the biography of a saint, but Herman was also a historical person. There is never any real stabs at who this person was, a person who was undoubtedly fascinating and earned the respect of both his peers and his enemies. Korsun just simply lists his actions, coupled with extensive reproduced letters, and expects this to be a biography. The book just demands the story of Herman be taken up by another author.

Overall, I found this book disappointing. I was disappointed because this book could of been so much, and instead was sadly so little.
