Teaching by Example

Teaching by Example-Henry Ware's book is an eloquent discussion of extemporaneous preaching. Ware's prose is so alive that he makes the reader think she/he is in the presence of a great extemporaneous preacher. He successfully shows that this art gives life to preaching in ways that written discourses do not. Yet, he is clear that extemporaneous preaching requires serious study and training of the mind. He chides laziness and urges that success in this form of preaching is a result of sincere commitment to self-development, and devotion of one's heart to the promotion of religious faith. But it is important to add that the way Ware writes makes the book useful and an asset to, not just preachers, but anyone interested in public speaking.

Great ideas!

I remember my older sister using Mod Podge to make crafts, but I never had the chance to use it. Lately, I've been hearing about it so much, I figured I had better find out more about this wonder product. I've learned that Mod Podge has been around for over 40 years and is a non-toxic, water soluble glue, sealer and finish. Amy Anderson is the queen of Mod Podge and Mod Podge Rocks is her newest book. In it she tells us that when she found Mod Podge she realized she had the Holy Grail of crafting in her hands.

Mod Podge Rocks explains the six simple (but important) steps to use this medium, which dries clear and can be used on almost any surface. Mod Podge Rocks has exciting ideas to make wearables, home decor and holiday crafts. I found myself repeatedly going back to look at the awesome cowboy boots with floral fabric mod podged on to them. Love! The Pressed Leaf Pendant is such a lovely way to preserve nature, and I am excited to try this technique with all kinds of tiny objects. In looking through Mod Podge Rocks!, it quickly becomes clear that Mod Podge can be used on pretty much Everything! I was amazed at some of the things that she decoupages, like bike helmets, suitcases and pumpkins. Of course there are also the classic ideas for using Mod Podge, for instance, labels for kitchen canisters, wall plaques, photo frames and clocks. Mod Podge Rocks includes more than forty projects, so I will definitely be keeping busy, and the options sure seem limitless!

About the Author

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Director of The Justice Research Association, a private consulting firm and "think tank" focusing on issues of law, crime, and justice. The Justice Research Association, which is based in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, serves the needs of the nation's civil and criminal justice planners, administrators, and educators through workshops, conferences, and grant-writing and program evaluation support. Its most significant project to date is the Criminal Justice Distance Learning Consortium (CJDLC). CJDLC can be found on the Web at http://www.cjcentral.com/cjdlc.

Dr. Schmalleger holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, having earned both a master's (1970) and doctorate (1974) from Ohio State University with a special emphasis in criminology. From 1976 to 1994, he taught criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. For the last sixteen of those years, he chaired the university's Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. He was named Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2001. As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Schmalleger helped develop the university's graduate program in security administration and loss prevention. He taught courses in that curriculum for more than a decade. Schmalleger has also taught in the New School for Social Research's online graduate program, helping to build the world's first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications. My purpose in writing this textbook has been to provide students with an appreciation for the fundamental nature of law, an overview of general legal principles, and a special understanding of the historical development of criminal law and its contemporary form and function in today's American society. Stories from real life, the critical placement of photographs illustrating cogent contemporary issues, and the use of end-of-chapter Capstone Cases are all meant to bring the law to life.

My approach has been strongly influenced by my belief that the law has always been, and remains, a vital policy-making tool. As a topic for study and discussion, the nature and life of the law is more important today than ever before. The challenges that face the law as it continues to adapt to the needs of a complex and rapidly changing society are highlighted in this text and serve to emphasize for readers the contemporary relevance of our ever-evolving American criminal law.

A central feature of this textbook can be found in its Capstone Cases, placed at the end of each chapter, which provide actual court opinions illustrating important themes in the law. Capstone Cases afford significant insights into the everyday workings of American jurisprudence, and they illustrate the logic by which appellate decisions are made. Law on the Books and Criminal Law in the News boxes, placed throughout the text, illustrate the multiplicity of legal perspectives found at federal, state, and local levels and make students aware of jurisdictional differences in the law. Marginal quotations, found alongside the text column throughout the book, serve to illustrate the inevitable link between matters of the criminal law and contemporary social issues.

Unlike most other criminal law textbooks, Criminal Law Today draws on the latest technology to facilitate learning. The guide also provides a useful self-paced review and allows self-testing for students wishing to delve more deeply into the subject matter of this text.

Like any author, lost in the proverbial forest of words, it is sometimes difficult for me to get a clear view of how my books will be received. As the first edition of this book neared completion, however, I felt satisfied that I had achieved what I set out to do. That feeling came as I glanced over the observations of one reviewer who had painstakingly read through this book as it was under development. About the Author
Robert Martin Bone is a professor emeritus at the University of Saskatchewan. He has published numerous papers in scholarly publications and is a fellow of both the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the Arctic Institute of North America. Dr. Bone holds a membership in a number of professional institutions, including the Canadian Association of Geographers and the Association of American Geographers. He is currently working with the Lac La Ronge Indian Band in northern Saskatchewan on issues of economic development, population growth and mobility, and health issues related to mobility and employment. Professor Bone has undertaken considerable field research in northern Canada and has visited northern Scandinavia and Siberia.

Excellent geographic study

Robert T. Bone's Regional Geography of Canada is a must for anyone who is interested in Canadian history or geography in general. It is very well organized and comprehensive. This book goes beyond what most of us think of when we hear the word "geography". It is not a book about maps, it is a book about how people live in Canada, why they live where they do, how their lives have impacted the land, and how the land has impacted their lives. It is a very interesting study and will make you think about how your own life is impacted by the environment around you... where ever you are!

A nit's best eye opener

I've wanted this book since its release but never got round to adding it to my poker library, so when I saw it available on Amazon for less than $50 I decided to buy it. Having previously read (and thoroughly enjoyed) The Poker Blueprint, I was expecting high quality content in this book and was not let down. Tri's writing style is clear, concise and made some of the trickier concepts easier to digest. I love that the NL Workbook contains theory as well as plenty of examples to put said theory in practice - which in my opinion is what makes a "good poker book" a "great poker book".

A little background information about my game:
I play SSNL 6 max online (super nit style) and as a result regularly find myself in spots against some of the better regulars where I tend to get confused/uncomfortable/a big brainfreeze, which resulted in me either hero calling without giving much consideration to their ranges, or being too weak tight in spots where an aggresive line should have been taken. A classic example is being afraid to play the optimal way "because I have been called/raised before in a similar situation" (most likely because I either bet or raised in the wrong spot/vs the wrong opponent)

After reading the book initially I spewed a little because I wasn't applying the concepts correctly. However as I read it a few more times, I gradually began to discover where I should be applying selective aggression, and where I should strongly consider folding (even though my instant reaction may have been to snap call).

My game is far from what I would call great, as I still make mistakes and get confused, but those situations seem to appear less often now I'm slowly moving away from the "I play my 2 cards" robotic button clicking approach, and am instead thinking more about the opponent's range as well as what they're likely to do with it. Now when I make a play, I ask myself why in my head and only go ahead if there's good reason to do so.

Having said the above, if you're not willing to put in the work, no book will make you a winning player. But if you dedicate some time to improving your game armed with the information in this book, you will get there eventually.

too hard to read on kindle

The NL workbook was offered as a kindle download; but it was too hard to read. the images of the card holdings could not be enlarged. I haven't tried using a magnifying glass, but in any case, I am disappointed that the fact that no one took the time to notice or resolve this. And, I will have to be cautious with future downloads of other books I intend to read on my kindle.

The tables are getting tougher...

Review for Daily Variance's Exploiting Regulars... Put it in your tank.

If you want greater insight into the modern view of poker, with a few gem-insights along the way, buy a book like this. Books like these will elevate you from "dangerous" to "fearless." You will be more able to make the correct play and be less concerned about how the cards may fall.

I play NLHE at a wide variety of levels (200NL-5000NL) both online and in live executive games that run very, very deep (300-500BBs). I regularly battle against 18-table rake-backing TAGs (many who have 2-3 million hands under their belts; but they still have huge holes in their games that this book illuminates), wealthy maniacs, live fish, as well as bracelet-winning "stars" and "red" pros looking to take out some well-healed execs over a bottle of scotch. I am often not the best or most experienced player at the table, but I usually find a way to survive. Well, I do better when I am folding every now and then ... As much varied poker experiences as I have, however, I am always looking for guidance in "putting it all together." And that is why I come to Daily Variance's publications; they put it together for me. They synthesize and organize what I already know and tell me things that I don't know or don't fully appreciate. I am a member of several coaching sites, I have read many of the e-books out there, and, each time Daily Variance puts out a new book, I still love having these at my bedside table... Tri's books always find a way of presenting absurdly common situations that I discover that I am yet to fully tank on.

If you have not mastered manipulating hand ranges and hand combinatorics, then these books are a must read. If you are good with such things, these books are still worthwhile, since they are insight into how another player/coach thinks about the game and they offer loads of hands to think through with the author (who will think about the hands in a way far more advanced than the "classic" poker books do).

Many people on the forums have questioned the value of paying hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for a poker book. But, I'd be willing to bet that you make at least one very large poker decision better next time you play if you study these books. One large pot won instead of lost means that even a $1K book starts paying for itself. I won a $2k+ pot that I would have otherwise lost if it weren't for having just read one of Tri's books...
