If you teach Euro or want to REALLY learn it...

...this is an INVALUABLE book. It covers all of A SPRITE (artistic, social, political, religious, intellectual, technological, and economic), provides stories, primary documents and great pictures and charts, and is a pretty easy read.

But please note I didn't say it was an ENJOYABLE read. It is a truly academic work, not written for mass, "fun" consumption. I read it to better prepare for teaching my AP Euro class and then had it on a grad school book list- it is a serious work. It is, at best, dry most of the time, but gets a great wealth of info across in a factual, not-editorialized way.

Excellent Reading for Readings in Nineteenth Century Europe

My professor assigned this book as a background material for our course in 19th century Europe. This is not a basic history book -- you can find those else where. This is a serious study of intellectual, political and social developments in a pivotal period of modern history. Well-written and organized, I couldn't have done as well in the class without it.

This book would serve as an excellent book for a modern European history class or for a person with an interest in such subject matter. I really commend the author for being able to produce such an informative book in a size and style that would be appropriate for a college undergrad or anyone with an interest in history.

Well worth it!

As a person who has been playing straight forward chords for a while now, I found this book an eye opener. I can recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning to fingerpick. The author literally takes you from "zero" to intermmediate. Included are some good techniques like slurs, hammer-ons and pulls-offs. You have to do your part though and practice the execrcises. I give this book a four because the English translation is not too good, but completely understandable. If you want to learn how to play songs on a guitar with a good baseline included, get this book.

Nick's English is a little rough, but his examples are great, they're plentiful, and he plays every one on YouTube. There are nearly 400 lessons, ranging from simple patterns to complete songs.

I enjoy Nick's YouTube postings and his website. I wanted to show a little support and bought the Kindle version of his book. It is all but unwatchable, the video examples are just links to YouTube, not much use if your not on line, and the tabs were awful. I may buy his paper book but I would warn people away from the E edition.

About the Author

H. Scott Fogler is the Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering and Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan, and a past president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He has chaired ASEE's Chemical Engineering Division and earned the Warren K. Lewis Award from AIChE for contributions to chemical engineering education and the 2010 Malcom E. Pruitt Award from the Council for Chemical Research. He is the author of the classic Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering, Fourth Edition (Prentice Hall, 2006), and Essentials of Chemical Reaction Engineering (Prentice Hall, 2011).

Steven E. LeBlanc is executive associate dean for academic affairs and professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Toledo. He has served as the chairman of the ASEE Chemical Engineering Division and as a co-chair of the 2007 ASEE Chemical Engineering Summer School for Faculty.

It's not that this framework is wrong. It's just not enough. You must learn how to carefully take a problem apart, look at its smallest elements, and devise a real, workable solution. The Duncker Diagram, for example, examines how to improve a situation, but then balances it with how to make the current situation workable. I've never seen that before...smart stuff.

Fogler and LeBlanc's book goes far beyond the typical approaches to solving problems by teaching real methods that help you see and decompose a problem much better. This may be a college textbook for engineering students, but I don't care. I use it in my Agile and scenario influence practice constantly. I admire their work and would like to see it on Kindle so I can influence my clients to buy it. Highly recommended.

I really liked this text book and it broke down processes very well. I rented it for my class and really wish I would have been able to buy it because it is definitely handy to refer to for problem solving techniques.

I love this book. I took a class in college that used it (one of the author's was my professor). It is not a textbook, but not a novel. It is something in the middle with lots of real world examples.

Grade 7 Up—The creation of this edition was clearly a monumental task and a labor of love for the editor, whose passion for and knowledge of popular music are first made evident in the introductory material. Within its alphabetical, cross-referenced arrangement, this ambitious work provides over 27,000 entries, including 6,000 that are new to this edition. Every aspect of popular music is covered, from Broadway show tunes and rap to heavy metal and big band, from the 1900s to today. The set provides information on artists and other important figures such as producers and songwriters. Entries encapsulate their subjects well even given length limitations. The six-page entry on the Beatles, for example, is concise yet comprehensive, as is the entry on Bob Dylan, which gives readers a clear sense of the man. Larkin and his contributors provide evaluations, using phrases such as "superbly crafted," to describe an album. The writing is always entertaining even when covering less-exciting career details. Each entry concludes with a comprehensive, rated discography covering all mediums and formats produced by the artist, and some also have further-reading lists. The main entries take up eight of this encyclopedia's volumes. The ninth volume provides a healthy quantity of selected album reviews, again presented alphabetically by artist, along with a bibliography, and the final volume is a set index. Those who have followed the progress of this excellent work (an LJ Best Reference Book in 1992 as The Guinness Encyclopedia of Popular Music; 2d ed., 1995) assume that Larkin will not disappoint, and here he delivers a monumental and quite handsome update. Anyone unfamiliar with this guide to 20th-century "nonclassical" music?rock, pop, rap, reggae, jazz, country, musical theater, etc.?will be staggered at the breadth and depth of the material. The third edition features 18,500 unsigned entries, normally 150 to 3000 words in length, including 4500 entirely new articles, with updates throughout. In comparison, the 14,500-entry 1992 edition now seems minuscule. Larkin continues to include performers, composers, producers, labels, companies, events, venues, films, and videos. One-hit wonders abound, and the international coverage is a model for all musical reference works. The index is now over 350 pages, with a song index of 50,000 titles, a relief for those confronting "who sang what?" questions. As with earlier editions, this is remarkably up-to-date, although additional "where are they now?" information would be welcome in future editions. Two other significant modifications have been made since 1995. For the first time, accompanying discographies list record labels and feature a five-star rating system; release dates of all recordings continue from earlier editions. The expansion into eight volumes also means that each volume is less unwieldy than before, although more shelf space is required for the set. *Starred Review* Larkin's new edition contains more than 27,000 entries, including 6,000 new ones and updates of many existing ones. The most comprehensive guide to popular music, this work includes virtually all well-known artists as well as thousands who are lesser known. The set has grown from 4 volumes to 10 since the first edition appeared, in 1992. The third edition was published in 1998.

Although the set is international in scope, the majority of the featured artists are from the U.S and the UK, arguably the most important sources of what we call "popular" music. In addition to providing biographical and artistic information about musicians, entries list album titles with release dates, recording labels, and a five-star rating system. The ratings indicate a comparison between the various works of one artist or group, not between the works of different artists. Larkin also includes entries for specific musical styles, record companies, Broadway musicals, and music-related films, such as This Is Spinal Tap. Most entries are one or two paragraphs in length, with longer ones for the most popular and prolific performers and broader topics.

This is an exhaustive survey of popular music. Larkin has spent nearly 40 years writing about, producing, and performing music, and his expertise is well respected. Keeping track of a continually changing industry is not an easy task. Decisions about whether to add or delete artists are based on years of familiarity with music of different styles and the ability to discern the important from the fleeting. Genres included are pop, country, reggae, jazz, Broadway, world music, and light classical, with diverse entries ranging from composer George Auric (1899-1983) to the more recently famous Simon Cowell, of American Idol.

Some other changes from the previous edition are worth noting. Both the song/album title and general indexes have increased by at least half. Larkin demonstrates his ability to remain current by more than doubling the artist and genre bibliography, from 91 to 230 pages, and he also added more than 4,500 short reviews of albums that he was not able to detail in the main artist entries. In 2007 the work will be added as a subscription product to the Grove Music Online database, putting it side-by-side with the most important music reference works. Utterly Amazing and, Unfortunately, Utterly Out of Reach

My local library has a copy of this, and if you're lucky, your library does as well. If not, you are missing out, assuming you don't have the 700-plus bucks to slap down for this baby. The editors thoroughly trace the careers of most of the artists you could probably name off the top off your head and rates them from one to five stars. The star ratings in particular are much improved over the previous releases that included the ratings. Fairly comprehensive; I'll only complain that he includes several cheesy Christian heavy metal groups of the eighties and fails to mention any vital Christian artists who actually made great music (There actually are some, like Adam Again, Daniel Amos, or Mark Heard). A special delight is the excellent balance between British and American tastes, not leaning one way more than the other between the (at times) very different critical camps on either side of the Atlantic. Check out your public library for this one, and bring plenty of change to make copies of your favorite entries. Colin would probably kill you, but I won't tell...

About the Author
Melody Carlson has written more than 200 books for teens, women, and children. Before publishing, Melody traveled around the world, volunteered in teen ministry, taught preschool, raised two sons, and worked briefly in interior design and later in international adoption. GREAT story... BUT....

I absolutely LOVED the idea of this book, and when it got here I absolutely loved to read it with the kids. We do bible study daily in our homeschool, and they are learning God's Word and truth. My point? Well... they (my kids) are now relating a child named Benjamin and some of his friends and intertwining it with the real account in the bible, and I'm just not comfortable with that. I like the story, but now when my kids are telling the story of Jesus' death and resurrection, they are now talking about how "...then Judas gave Benjamin silver..." And I'm forced to tell them "Benjamin isn't part of the REAL story...but yes, the other characters are..." I'm just not sure if this will be a part of our reading any longer, just because I cannot expect them to believe the word of God if there is a fictitious character added to it, as in this book. It's causing confusion with the Word. I suppose for us, we'll stick with the original story in the bible.

I reeallllly liked this book... just cannot use it any longer. Perhaps this won't be a problem for anybody else.. but it was for us.

This story is wonderful. My 4 and 10 year olds love it. One problem - however this problem is NOT with this great book- was that after reading reviews I purchased the "Resurrection Eggs" from Family Life to go with it. The story matches up fairly well but there are a few pages that don't have eggs in that set, and there are a few eggs that don't match the pages. That is because they do NOT go together. The Resurrection Eggs are a wonderful set and have a little booklet inside that tells the story of each egg- not quite as well told as Benjamins Box. The Benjamin's Box book is an awesome book and at the top of each page shows a color of egg and a topic (I don't have it in front of me, so for example blue egg, whip). I'm not sure if there was a set of eggs at one time that was sold with this book. It doesn't matter. My 10 year old and I decided that next year, we make our own Resurrection Eggs! We will get the right color eggs and scavenge around until we can fill them to match the book and store them in an egg carton:) Then we will have two sets of Resurrection Eggs to choose from each year and two books. We are totally happy with our purchase of this book. I got my misinformation from some other reviews. But if I hadn't, we wouldn't have these two great products and a fun plan for 2015!

We have used this book with Resurrection Eggs (eggs that contain symbols of the Passion story) for almost twenty years. We have shared it with family as well as church and after school youth classes. It takes literary liberty as it is a sort of historical fiction. The story from a youth's viewpoint as he lives during the biblical time of the passion week holds the children's interest. The story helps the children understand the culture and how this story affects them in a personal way. The children look forward to opening the eggs as the story unfolds.

About the Author

Larry Goldstein has received several distinguished teaching awards, given more than fifty Conference and Colloquium talks & addresses, and written more than fifty books in math and computer programming.� He received his PhD at Princeton and his BA and MA at the University of Pennsylvania. He also teaches part time at Drexel University.

David Schneider, who is known widely for his tutorial software, holds a BA degree from Oberlin College and a PhD from MIT.� He is currently an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland. He has authored eight widely used math texts, fourteen highly acclaimed computer books, and three widely used mathematics software packages. He has also produced instructional videotapes at both the University of Maryland and the BBC.

Martha Siegel holds a BA from Russell Sage College, attended Rensselear Polytechnic Institute as a special student, and received his PhD at the University of Rochester. From 1966 until 1971 she taught at Goucher University in Baltimore. Since 1971 she has been a professor at Towson State University, also in Maryland. Professor Siegel has been on the writing team of this book since the fifth edition and is also the co-author of a precalculus reform book.

Good Text for Basic Calculus Concepts

Contrary to what some other reviewer have claimed, I found this book quite helpful. It provides the basic concepts of Calculus such as limits and derivative rules and applications, exponents and logarithms, integrals, double variable calculus, trig functions, techniques of integrations, an introduction to differential equations, and even series.
I found this book very easy to use. It presents the information in a very terse, straightforward manner. Basically, it cuts down on the mathematical theory and allows students to solve the important equations quick and easy. Instead of being lost in complicated definations of derivations, I was able to quickly find derivations and discover their uses in functions.
This is the book that I used for my "Calculus for Social and Natural Science Majors" course. Personally, I feel that I learned much from this book. I never took a Calculus class in high school and wasn't the most mathematically inclinded so i was sure that Calculus was going to be tough. This book made it really easy to understand and somehow Calculus turned into one of my easiest classes.
This book, however, is not for those who plan on taking higher level Calculus classes. It has most of the fundamentals, but not more advanced topics. Also, several topics are presented out of order from a regular Calc 1 class (so I'm told). For instance, calculus of several varibles--a topic usually covered in a third level course--occurs before techniques of intregration.
The book is quite suitable for a Business/Natural Science Calc class, as it was intended to be used for, and overall seems to make the subject easier. It provides a good means of jumping right into the subject.

Just awful

I was assigned this book to teach Calculus to business majors. To call it horrid would be an understatement. Important concepts are only briefly touched upon in examples (such as function composition) and takes unacceptable liberties (saying things like "it is sufficient to think of e as 2.7"). Too much time is spent on trivialities and busywork, rather than examples that would nail the concept down to the student. The book introduces the concept of the derivative before the limit - that's like learning to ride a bike before you know how to walk!

I've never seen a Calc book worse than this. If I had my druthers, I'd use Stewart for my class. It's not perfect, but at least my students would understand how the limit relates to the derivative, rather than have it introduced and immediately dimissed.

Make sure whether you need access to the mathlab online section or not before purchase.

I purchased this version instead of the hardcover cause I thought it was just a cheaper paperback version of the same book.

I was wrong.

This is the international version of the book. Looking at the page again the only way I can tell this is the (PNIE) in the title, didn't know what that meant at first, and if you zoom in on the image you can see the words in that orange space on the cover. But if you don't know what PNIE means and don't zoom in you'll have no way to know this is the international version.

It still covers all the same stuff. Calculus in the USA is the same as Calculus elsewhere in the world. So if you need this for a classroom class you'll more than likely be fine.

But if you're taking an online class and the homework is through the book publisher's online mathlab course you're not going to get the necessary authentication code to be able to log in and do the homework (unless you buy the code at the price of a new text book as well, basically doubling the cost.) Depending on what you need the book for this will either be fine for your needs or inadequate.

So read your syllabus first to see if you need the online component or not.

Don't be fooled by the skinny Sumo wrestlers...

..."Security Warrior" is a heavyweight contender. Peikari and Chuvakin offer a dark counterpart to O'Reilly classics like "Practical UNIX and Internet Security" (PUAIS) and "Securing Windows NT/2000 Servers for the Internet." If you've been waiting for the next good security book from O'Reilly, "Security Warrior" (SW) is it.
Part I, "Software Cracking," was my favorite section. This material is largely not for beginners, which marked a welcome change from many competing books. Part I gave an introduction to assembly language, followed by reverse engineering exercises on Windows, Linux, and Windows CE. I admit a good portion of the section was beyond my skill level, but I was able to "patch" binaries to alter program flow and even use a buffer overflow to execute previously unreachable code in a sample program. These sorts of "hands-on" exercises were informative and enjoyable.
In the second part, "Network Stalking," I was pleased to see page 181 correctly state the role played by TCP sequence numbers. (Many authors are confused by this concept, oddly.) An entire chapter on social engineering advice was certainly novel. For the rest of the book, my favorite chapter (number 10) discussed techniques to frustrate forensic analysis. A fairly brief chapter on SQL injection made good points as did an examination of mathematics' role in intrusion detection in chapter 19.
My only real criticism of SW centers on inclusion of generic security information. I didn't mark the book down for chapters on securing UNIX, for example, as the material is sound. However, if you've got PUAIS you can skip chapters 11 and 12.
SW has something for everyone in the security community. It's a broad survey of current security issues, ranging from detailed analysis of assembly language to case studies on incident response. The authors have packed a lot of value into their 500+ page work.

"Know Your Enemy". This phrase is on the cover of the book Security Warrior, and it is an apt subtitle for the book. Very few security books on the market today do more than just tell you about the types of software and network attacks that exist. Peikari and Chuvakin go beyond the "what" of attacks and show you "how" to exploit systems and software.
This book is definitely geared to the experienced developer or network administrator. For instance, the first eight pages is an explanation of assembly language, registers, stacks and the like. Each following chapter on reverse engineering then takes that knowledge and walks you through how to analyze an executable using tools that you can purchase or download. Obviously, if you have absolutely no assembler language knowledge, you'll be lost here. But if you have that background, you'll start to learn how hackers develop exploits, and how you can build more secure software once you understand the vulnerabilities.
At the end of each chapter, the authors list a number of additional references (both books and websites) that can help you to further your understanding of the material presented. This is a great addition if you are looking to focus in on a particular type of attack, like those related to wireless security. At the website for the book, they have also made sample programs available that can be used by the reader to work through exercises in the book. For instance, when they present information on reverse engineering, they also provide a sample program that you can analyze and crack. A perfect way to lead the reader from theory to practical knowledge.
The argument could be made that this book could be used by crackers to learn how to break software. The reality is that this information is already out there. A book like this will help those who are trying to prevent break-ins understand the methods that are being used against them. And henceforth, the sub-title "Know Your Enemy".
One caveat about the book... Be very careful with the material presented in the reverse engineering section. Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), reverse engineering can be considered a crime in certain circumstances. The authors acknowledge this, and that's probably why they provide their own sample programs for you to work on. Still, just remember that this knowledge, if misused, could land you in some very hot water.
My only complaint about the book... The sumo wrestlers on the cover really needed to be bigger... :-)
Conclusion
This is one of the few books that goes beyond the "what" and deals with the "how" of system and software security. A thorough reading and study of this book will arm you with the tools and knowledge you need to analyze and bight back against software

Phenomenal Book about the "Dark Side of Security"

A programmer friend of mine recently opined to me that security books tend not only to inform the "good guys" (sys admins and network security folk) about how attacks and hacker invasions occur, but also the "bad guys." I suspect most of the so-called "bad guys" already know the information presented in books like these. And if the "bad guys" already know most of the tricks, what better way to fight them than to use those "tricks" against them?
This is the book's main purpose, to show the reader computer security from the perspective of the person trying to attack and invade your computer or network. This is clearly not a book for beginners, as the book's introduction states this. It is for system admins and others interested in learning all they can about computer security. It truly provides a wealth of information in its 500 pages about different ways those so inclined can wreak havoc on your computer system or network.
There are chapters on "reverse engineering" programs (after a brief introduction to assembly language which the book points out gives you lots of control over a computer's CPU). These are ways you can reverse engineer programs in Windows, Windows CE (interesting how before reading this book I'd never given thought to how handheld devices could also be attacked and/or infected with virii or worms), and Linux. This of course proves that even the Linux OS is not as secure as some might think.
I liked the chapter on social engineering because it proves how you can infiltrate a system by researching the company for specific names and charm your way into getting sensitive information, which leads into "online reconnaissance" and also ways to hide your tracks (or is this known as "covering your ass?) so you don't get caught?
There's a whole section of the book that describes attacks on various platforms (Unix, Windows Client & Windows Server, SQL and Wireless) and the book's last section describes methods of defense against them.
This is a book with an amazing amount of information that at first glance may scare the living daylights out of some sys admins when they learn of the relative ease with which a system can be compromised. Then again, most security experts know of the risks and dangers involved with computer security. And I've always felt that to defend yourself against an attack, you should "know the enemy." This book offers lots of ways and "tricks" to do just that.
