All of Janice VanCleave's science books are wonderful, this earth science book is no exception. I had these for our children growing up and bought this one and other Janice VanCleave books for my son's girlfriend who is a first year earth science teacher. My kids all enjoyed doing experiments out of this book and I am positive her students will also.

Win Science Fairs and Extra Credit!!! Read This!!

An award-winning science teacher and science fair judge, Janice VanCleave took copious notes about criteria shared among the very best exhibits. This book details the winners by explaining how and why to replicate results, without spoiling the journey of discovery inherent to each project. Its beauty is in harnessing the enthusiastic yet un-focused student to pinpoint a broad area of interest, creating a project using the Scientific Method applicable to a dozen Earth Science specific topics.
The entire book is a winner, helping students design a project using the Scientific Method but also to communicate those results in a clearly visual manner on 3-sided Foam-Core Project Board. Presentation is critical: a brilliant project may be wasted if its intricacies completely escape the viewer. Ms VanCleave shows how to navigate the 'marketing' portion of the board in addition to keeping a strictly scientific approach to recording data.
Recommend this book to fifth grade children and up. It is worth every penny, especially if you have more than one child in school at a time.

Good, but lacking for the advanced player

Written on a narrow topic and advertised as dealing solely with bet structuring (as opposed to selection), I expected the book to emphasize and detail strategies for maximizing potential return at appropriate levels of risk through the use of exotic wagering - the key principles of a disciplined and winning approach to the races. Simply put, I wanted to know when to add that extra horse to a trifecta ticket or when it made financial sense to leave off a vulnerable favorite in a leg of the Pick 4. In contrast, however, Exotic Betting is styled more as an introduction to exotic bet structuring for the beginner, and could be described as simply an extended and more in-depth version of a pamphlet handed out a track explaining simple horizontal and vertical strategies. This is, by no means, intended as an insult to the book or to Crist, and is more a warning to the veteran/professional player looking for advanced treatment of the subject. Indeed, the book is geared more toward the reader of Handicapping 101(which, incidentally, is a great introductory book) who routinely boxes trifectas and three-horse exactas than the reader looking to apply the principles of Fooled by Randomness or a hearty statistics tome to their wagering.

At its core, Exotic Betting contains a discussion of the basic strategies for both vertical (exacta, trifecta, and superfecta) and horizontal (daily double, pick three, pick four, and pick six) wagers. For the most part, the strategies are sound and provide a good, launching pad for deeper thinking about the exotics. In particular, Crist mentions the single, most important piece of advice for the exotics bettor: Exotics can not be used as a means to profit from an overall lack of clarity. This was a lesson that I learned in the early days of wagering, believing that I could use these bets as a replacement for difficult decision making. While you may occasionally reap the reward from this method, the bettor is typically not getting a return in accordance with the risk undertaken. And, at the core, that is what exotic betting is about -- finding ways to increase the return while managing risk -- all based upon your opinion and analysis of the race.

Unfortunately, Exotic Betting does not delve deeply into this fundamental dilemma - one in which the handicapping literature desperately needs more work. Indeed, one problem I have had in the past with other handicapping books was the failure of the authors to explore the rationales underlying certain decisions and attempt to discern general principles from specific examples - a key ingredient in the rigorous pursuit of knowledge. While Exotic Betting serves an introduction to the subject, more guidance and detailed exploration of the relation between risk and reward is sorely needed in any future text dedicated to exotic bet structuring. In looking at Crist's work, we can see the questions that need to be answered in an advanced treatment of the subject. For example, in devising his tickets for the Pick Four and Pick Six, he normally divides his horses into four groups - A's (likely winners), B's (horses that can win if the A's fail), C's (horses that could conceivably win, but are unlikely) and X's (eliminations). Based on these classifications, he then creates tickets with various combinations of the non-eliminated horses to cover a vast range of possibilities. While Crist gives some examples of his "Chinese Menu" selection process (e.g. three from Group A with one from Group C), there is no discussion of the reasons why certain combinations are used. As a result, the reader is left wondering why he determined that financial rewards are best served by these combinations, and how to make these adjustments to their wagers. The same problem occurs in discussing the amounts to bet on certain combinations. In fashioning his tickets, Crist mentions that when he plays a Pick Four ticket with four A's (the likeliest winners), he buys it four times to compensate for the lower payoff. Yet, much like the earlier discussion regarding the selection of combinations, no explanation is given on why or how these amounts were calculated. To the participant in the handicapping life, there is nothing worse than putting out capital at an undue amount of risk for the range and likelihoods of various returns, and, consequently, the horseplayer needs theoretical tools to help him assess when he has either overplayed or underplayed their capital.

Unlike the poker or chess player, whose shelves are filled with intellectual discussions of the finer points of the game, the advanced horse player looking for rigorous approaches to betting the game is still without much hope. Hopefully, in the coming years, an author - perhaps even Crist himself - will begin to develop the potential of the ideas in Exotic Betting, and bring much needed new insight to the advanced participant of the horse playing game. But, until that day, any player who finds himself boxing trifectas, baseballing exactas, or filling out a Pick 4 ticket with 2 horses in each leg, would be wise to pick up Exotic Betting to begin the process of deeper critical thinking.

New to EXOTIC BETTING, this one's for you.

This is a great book for WPS bettors who are evolving into an exotic bettor. The book not only explains the different types of wagers, it also tells you the smart way on making these bets.

The book is a very easy read. I especially enjoyed the chapter on the pick-6. This is a bet that I only seriously tried to tackle once (I got 4 out of 6 on a $128 ticket). This is a bet that the average horseplayer should avoid, however if you must, read this book. Steve Crist normally spends between $400 and $1000 dollars (out of my league)on the pick 6, and has spent substantially more on the Ultra Pick 6.

The new exotic bettor (and smaller bank rolled) however should stick with the other exotics covered in the book. Crist does a great job on these wagers too. Although nothing ground breaking, the inexperienced horse player will find it very useful. The experienced horseplayer will enjoy it too, because it is put together very well.

Wise, relentlessly tested,"Exotic Betting" has an almost Buddhistic approach to thoroughbred wagering: Lose the ego, the King-of-the-Handicappers mentality, allow yourself to be wrong in the right spots and then bam, you're on your way.

Not since Andrew Beyer's "Picking Winners" 30 years ago has a book given horseplayers more hope. An obvious must.

A clear pool of practical wisdom, this rewarding modern reinterpretation of the classic Tibetan Book of the Dead is a manual on learning to accept death, on caring for the dying, and on spiritual growth. Rinpoche, a Tibetan Buddhist teacher who has lived in the West since 1971, maintains that innermost consciousness, rather than an unchanging soul or ego, survives the death of the body. He draws parallels between contemporary Western near-death experiences and the afterlife journey through the bardos, or intermediate planes between death and rebirth, described in sacred Tibetan texts. Bardos, he further argues, are junctures that also occur continually throughout life, opportunities for liberation present in ordinary daily experiences, in sleep and dreams. The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying interprets Tibetan Buddhism and its views on the afterlife. "Fear of death and ignorance of the afterlife are fueling the destruction of our planet," asserts Rinpoche. Indeed, Western people are taught to deny and fear death. The wisdom of Buddha, however, states that life and death are one entity. Death is a mirror through which the whole of life is reflected. Rinpoche explains the Buddhist philosophy of death in simple yet dynamic terms and tells us how we can transform our lives, prepare for death, and help the dying by employing these beliefs. The underlying theme is that preparing for and accepting our finitude help us to live more responsible and productive lives. The text is ably read by Rinpoche and Lisa Brewer, Charles Tart, and Michael Toms. Recommended for academic libraries.

Absolutely life-changing

I read this book nearly 20 years ago and remember sobbing after finishing it. I couldn't put my finger on it then, but now realize that I was sensing the depth to which it would effect me and my life. Out of a desire to "come back to" my old Self -- one I have sorely missed lately -- I recently decided to read this book again. (I needed a new copy so that I could make fresh highlights and notations.) I'm amazed to see from where SO many of my "leanings," beliefs, and core values had come. This book had clearly laid the foundation for most -- if not all -- of my long-held interest in/study of alternative medicine and energy healing -- tools I've relied upon and successfully used for nearly two decades. More than that, this book rooted my understanding of "the way things work" in the universe and blended with the teachings of my Christian upbringing to provide me with a rich and unique perspective on how to navigate life and it's challenges.
I'll tell you a secret (and non-believers may find this a fluke): Since re-starting this book two weeks ago, I've had many strange and wonderful synchronicities occur that have validated my re-discovering it. Re-reading it seems to be like hitting the "reset" button -- putting me back into the natural flow of life and returning me to the happier, more peaceful person I once was. I wish the same for you as you begin your own journey with Sogyal Rinpoche's masterpiece.

Amazing help during a loved one's death

I credit this book with so much - I've gained a different and more beautiful perspective on life and death than I ever thought possible. When my close friend was dying of cancer, I had a year to read this and prepare for what was going to happen, and it sounds crazy, but by the time his passing came, I was ready. I had such a healthy, beautiful mindset about it that I could truly celebrate his life instead of feeling grief-stricken. It was amazing. What a gift.

I have loaned it to others when going through the death & dying process with their loved ones, and while some have described it as "intense" (which I did not feel it to be personally), they have ended up purchasing their own copies and passing it to their friends and loved ones as well.

A few recommendations:

- this book would likely not be helpful for those who are in denial about the death of a loved one or still feeling as though if they just fight harder or get more medicine their loved one could be saved. This book addresses death as a fact of life that we all must accept and understand, and thus those who aren't quite there yet, or who feel that death is a 'failure' of some kind (medicine, willpower, etc.), or haven't accepted it as an inevitable conclusion probably won't be in the right mindset to be able to use its guidance.

- It helps to be an open-minded person who can see the connections between faiths and belief systems - I imagine it wouldn't be as helpful for someone who devoutly follows one specific non-Buddhist dogma and believes all others are 100% wrong, since this links multiple faiths/beliefs/spirituality together (beautifully!). It is ultimately based in Buddhism (albeit a Western interpretation), so anyone who would automatically reject it based on its eastern roots would probably not benefit from it.

If you don't fit into either of the two above categories, it's amazing. I have friends who have read it even when not facing the death of a loved one, just to gain a healthier perspective on life. It's a beautiful book that contains beautiful words, no matter what you're facing in life.

this is a wonderful book. it's one of those books that you can pick up anytime and open to any page and get a conscious and supportive message, whatever physical and emotional place you're in. i also purchased the Tibetan Book of the Dead at the same time, having skimmed that book years ago and wanting to get more deeply into it again. but Tibetan Book of the Dead didn't seem accessible to me, someone who has been very interested yet undisciplined in learning about Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism. the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying is a good entry point for me because Sogyal Rinpoche gives a it broader context and explains how we can approach the subject of death as we do the changing of seasons and the way we and our environment are connected and transforming all of the time. it's an excellent book whether you're looking for theory, practical meditation approaches or exercises, or -- as i was, a sort of guide book the the guide of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. highly recommend reading this and passing it along!

A history of being PRO!

Its not often that you meet someone who has such a common sense yet sophisticated focused approach on what makes the network marketing profession....professional. Eric Worre is someone I met many years ago when I was asked to help in a dispute between two people who had partnered up in another network marketing company and what I remembered the most was the way Eric handled the situation to everyones satisfaction. That showed me a skill set that has only become stronger over the years as Eric has relentlessly worked to strengthen the best the profession can provide while pointing out the weaknesses along the way.

Never be afraid to point people towards Eric and his [...] site since he's very protective of the profession as a whole and wants it to be a collaborative place where many from different companies are not afraid to minge and share ideas about better ways for our profession to excel.

After reading an advanced copy of this book I knew this was the tool I wanted for all new and seasoned people on my team. After a 18 year hiatus from MLM, three years ago I decided my timing was right and in three short years I'm now in the top 100 of a billion dollar energy company. So much of what I do everyday to guide my team comes directly from the teaching/mentoring that Eric provides. Common sense direction that most people can relate to and a way to showcase how incredible network marketing can be for people when done right and done more importantly...professionally!

Great Story

This was well written, had great character development, and was hot! This story is kind of sci-fi erotica, but in a good way. I promise there is nothing cheesy in here at all. I only have one minor complaint. I'm not sure why people seem to think women can have sex multiple times a day every day...especially when they are virgins. Ok, maybe I'm weird but I like to give it a rest for at least a day. Lol.

About the Author

Dr. Mustafa Tokyay is a professor of civil engineering in the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey. He served as the civil engineering department chair (1999–2003) and dean of the engineering faculty (2003–2006) in the same university. He worked as a visiting researcher at Dundee University, Scotland (1988–1989) and as a visiting professor at the Eastern Mediterranean University, Cyprus (1993–1994). His research interests include cement and concrete technology and the use of industrial by-products in cement and concrete. He is the author, coauthor or editor of more than 70 papers, proceedings and books.
