Cold Calling Technique That Really Work

A few observations from someone whose been selling for over 13 years:

1. Well, there is a section in the book that explains how bad it is to cold call using a cell phone, an absolute no-no .... yet look at the cover of the book - Hmmmmm.

2. At the back of the book the author is promoting his other titles, one of which is Email Selling Techniques though Chapter 11 Titled: Email Tactics - he summarizes it in just one word: "Don't" !".
Getting mixed messages here.....

3. The book does not address one of the most important hurdles to the cold call - reaching the decision maker. The author goes through the entire book with the assumption that the cold caller knows who they are trying reach, who the correct contact is.... in my 13+ years of selling, cold calling a major part of it, the authority is hardly ever known. Although he does talk about the gate keeper, it's a gate keeper of a person he knows he's looking to reach.

I think 2.5 stars is accurate.

Great Resource, Easy Read, Clarity in Purpose

I'm new to sales and purchased this book to introduce myself to the art of cold calling. I'm currently reading just about anything I can get my hands on but I enjoy Schiffman's material because it is simple, clear and to the point. Along with that, Schiffman has a simple approach to sales that echoes my own personal values about honesty and integrity. This book focuses heavily on how to have conversations during the calls and less on how to prepare for the call outside of having a workable script.

Sales is not a game... it's a profession and career. Schiffman ultimately wants to encourage his readers to adopt that attitude. His advice gives basic and practical tips on that can help change how you think about what you're doing. With this resource, you'll find more success because you'll have an approach that lets you work within your strengths while identifying your weaknesses. If you selling anything over the phone, you will find some value in this quick read and as an ongoing reference.

I purchased the Kindle edition and had no problems with my experience.

Warming up the Cold Call

As a lifetime salesman, I have embraced the cold call...still not my favorite activity, but it is foundational and necessary for success in almost any type of sales career. This book breaks down the probability of hitting your goals to a numbers game.

X number of calls will generate X number of prospects. A close rate of X on X number of prospects will equal X amount of sales. It's true and just that simple.

The straightforward approach in the book to "doing the work" both in preparation and execution are not revolutionary or even surprising. The value received from the book is as follows:
-The steps before the call in planning what you will say
-The targets that you will call
-The rebuttals that you will use when challenged
-The art of closing
-The number of numbers that you will need to dial in a prepared manner

The author is honest in his approach, stedfast in his work ethic, and confident in his approach leading to success. Everyone in sales should embrace these concepts, not gimmicks, and give them a solid test before discounting their value.

I was worried about the end of the world

Two days ago I found out that the world will end on 21st December 2012 which is a tremendous concern to me, a friend got me this book to take my mind of matters and to help prevent me from fixating on the date 21/12/2012. I'm only a couple of pages in and I have to say I've still got the 21st December 2012 on my mind, maybe the later sections of the book will divert my attentions.

I hope nothing happens as I've become rather attached to the world.

Clinical Radiology of the Horse is the best-selling, practical guide to all areas of equine radiography and radiology written by an experienced group of clinicians with a broad range of backgrounds. As with previous editions, this fourth edition provides more than 700 normal and clinical images including annotated radiographs and line diagrams. Many of the images have been replaced by digital images, and there are also many new illustrations, both in the textbook and on the companion website.� It provides a comprehensive guide both to the techniques used to obtain radiographs of the horse, and to radiographic interpretation. The normal radiographic anatomy of immature and mature horses is presented with normal variations, incidental findings, and details of significant abnormalities.� Remarks on clinical prognosis and treatment are also included. The text has been updated to include new information, knowledge gained from continued clinical experience and the most relevant references from recent literature. The emphasis throughout is on practical tips, common pitfalls, and the techniques used to obtain the best radiographs of specific areas and conditions.

The fourth edition has been completely updated and now fully reflects the move to digital imaging. Additional changes to this edition include major revisions to the chapters on the head, thorax, and abdomen; expansion of and division into three chapters for the foot, pastern, and fetlock; and further reading lists organised under sub-headings for ease of reference. About the Author

Janet A. Butler

Jan specialises in equine radiography and has 40 years’ experience in this field. She joined the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, UK in 1975 where she gained considerable experience working with many internationally renowned veterinary surgeons. Since 1997 she has been working in private practice, initially at the Willesley Equine Clinic, UK, which since 2009 has been part of the B&W Equine Group.�

Christopher M. Colles

Chris qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, UK in 1971. After three years in mixed practice (where he obtained a Part I Diploma in Radiology) he joined the Animal Health Trust as a clinician in 1975. He has carried out research in many areas of equine orthopaedics and radiology, having a particular interest in the horse’s foot. In 1988 he returned to practice, where he became a senior partner in Avonvale Veterinary Practice, specialising in equine orthopaedics, until his recent retirement from practice. He is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a Specialist in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery. Chris was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Worshipful Company of Farriers in 2000 in recognition of his research into conditions of the foot, and involvement with farriery education.

Sue J. Dyson

After qualifying from the University of Cambridge in 1980, Sue worked for a year at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania, and then spent a year in private practice in Pennsylvania. Sue then joined the Centre for Equine Studies of the Animal Health Trust, UK, where she has specialised in lameness diagnosis and diagnostic imaging. Sue is recognised as a Specialist in Equine Orthopaedics by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and holds the RCVS Diploma in Equine Orthopaedics. She is an Associate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. She has published widely on lameness, radiography ultrasonography, nuclear scintigraphy and magnetic resonance imaging.

Svend E. Kold

Svend qualified from The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University in Copenhagen in 1979. He then spent over 10 years at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket. After a sabbatical year at Colorado State University, he joined the Willesley Equine Clinic, UK, where he was a partner until 2009. He is now a private consultant. He specialises in lameness and orthopaedic diagnostics and surgery and is recognized as a Specialist in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. He is veterinary consultant to a European equine insurance company and is involved as an expert in many equine legal cases, both in the UK and Europe. He has published regularly on orthopaedic subjects.

Paul W. Poulos

Following graduation from the University of California at Davis in 1960, Paul founded a private practice. In 1972 he returned to Davis to specialise in radiology where he was became Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology. He moved to the Royal Veterinary College of Stockholm, Sweden and later was Associate Professor at Radiology at the University of Utrecht. On return to the USA, was Professor of Radiology at University of Florida, and later chairman of the Department of Radiology. In 1990 Paul left academia to establish his own consulting practice, Poulos Veterinary Imaging, based in Ukiah, California. He has published widely on osteochondrosis, navicular disease and diseases of the fetlock. Paul is now retired and has not contributed to the fourth edition of the book.

Following graduation from the University of Saskatchewan in 1999, Sarah worked for two years at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania.� In 2001 she moved to the University of Davis, California to specialise in diagnostic imaging.� In 2004, she was awarded Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology. After 12 years in the diagnostic imaging department of the University of Davis, California, Sarah recently moved into private practice in California, but remains Adjunct Associate Professor of Diagnostic Imaging, Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis. This is a quality book for interior design student looking to understand the construction of furniture and what the price point of a custom piece should be. Natale does an excellent job of utilizing text and pictures to educate the reader. My only complaint is the layout of the page numbers- when flipping through the book you have no idea what page you are on- makes a normally quick task time consuming.

The book contains line drawing after line drawing punctuated with a few black and white photographs that are so hard to see, they add no value; and there are no color photographs.

The information contained in this book is not new, not newly presented, not newly discussed. The content is widely available on the Internet or easily purchased in a book for 1/4 the cost. You do learn how some furniture is built and about how joints are designed, all superficially-not in a way that would help you actually complete a joint in your own shop or garage. The learning in the book could be done with a walk through an antique furniture shop.

If you think you're interested in this book, I suggest you go to the library first and look at it. This book was an expensive disappointment. But the cover is cool.

Stephen A. Royle is professor of island geography in the School of Geography, Archaeology, and Palaeoecology at Queen’s University Belfast. He is a founding member of the International Small Island Studies Association, deputy editor of Island Studies Journal, and the author of numerous books.

Islands are places but are also a state of mind for armchair island-hoppers.

This is one of the better books in the "Earth" series. I've been an island junkie most of my life, an armchair island hopper. This book is good entertainment for an island junkie, but it's not just a jaunt through a selection of islands. The "Culture" part of the title really does mean an examination of the idea of islands, such as the idealization of South Sea islands such as Tahiti and Hawai'i. This part of the book is really an examination of islands as a state of mind.

Royle's writing is rather good, and the photos (and other illustrations) are good enough to set a reader's mind to drifting off, thinking about blue seas dotted with atolls. Among the aspects looked at in the book are depictions of islands in visual art as well as in literature (remember Herman Melville?). There is an appendix listing 100 islands by size and population. There's a lot of fascinating detail about some places, such as St. Helena and Ascension (two of my favorites).
