Interesting Enough Parallels

This was an interesting read for me as an adult who has three children, two who are neurodiverse; and as a woman who has physical disabilities. I was able to draw parallels in how society treats autistic people, who have evolved naturally, as well as anyone who has other neurological differences and disabilities apart from the sociological ideal of what a human is supposed to look like. It shows exactly what Eugenics is about, and the dangers it poses in crushing and disposing of individuals who may not be what's wanted based on what they think these people represent and are, but are valuable nonetheless. There some truth and insight into the amorality of using humans as experiments.

That's what kept me involved in the series. The storyline itself, if I ignored the syrupy love story, was decent. GMO humans? It's where we're headed. The writing was all right, but not top notch. I would say that the writing level was sophomoric, but not so terrible that I had to put it down at times.

What made me hate the fact that I purchased the series versus borrowing the series and paying nothing was the ending. I effing hated the ending so much that I threw my Kindle across the room. Don't worry, it landed in a pile of dirty clothes that were on the way to the laundry. ::sigh::

I've been watching the movies, which I enjoy quite a bit.

Loved the first two best

Entertaining plot. Loved the first two best, and balled my eyes out on the third one-- and not for a good reason like in the final Hunger Games. Hated the ending! Loved the characters!! As an avid reader I found Veronica Roth's writing to be a little amateur. Will probably still read her again though if she writes something that sounds good.

Was first turned on the series after seeing the first movie, only a week ago... Then watched the rest of the movies that are out--and then bought and binge read the books in four days... The movie plots for "Insurgent" and "Agilent: Part 1" are sooo different than the books! I liked the movies sooo much better!! I hope the last movie is also differs from the book AND HAS A BETTER ENDING! Fingers crossed.

Amazingly written. I fell in love with pretty much all of the characters as soon as they were introduced ( with exceptions for Caleb and David.) I love all of the problems and troubles that Tris and Four go through not only alone but together. It took me 2 months to read the books because they were so good and sometimes I would find myself skipping to the end of the page to find out what happens and then I would have to go back to reread the page. I like the bundle because it saves time and money.

Over all it was was an amazing set of books and I am rereading Divergent. The ending of Allegiant was sad but it needed to happen. I won't spoil anything but let's just say I let some tears fall. But all in all it was amazing series and I would tell anybody to read these books.

Great read.

I have been an avid reader of books set in the forgotten realms setting for a long time. The Gilded Rune stands as not only one of best the books set in the realm that I have read but one of the best books that I have ever read. While fast paced Smedman still manages to paint memorable characters from steadfast in his beliefs Torrin to aloof Eralynn and everyone in between, it is perhaps a dark and gritter story but such things make the slivers of hope all the sweeter. I would recommend this book to anyone even those that are new to the forgotten realms setting.

Enjoyed hearing about other dwarven kingdoms finally

Perhaps the best part of this novel was the description of Eartheart. It is so rare to hear in-depth details and description of dwarven culture outside of Mithral Hall. The Delvers, Lords, and temples were especially good while the end battle had me on the edge of my seat wondering about what twist was next. My only complaint was Torrin comes off as a bit of an overgrown child the whole time but I don't know if that was meant to be that was due to his age as a human would have him acting as a dwarf. Otherwise it was a great novel overall.

Excellent addition to the realms

The Gilded Rune is a stand alone novel by Lisa Smedman. Other book by here are the House of Serpents trilogy Venom’s Taste, Viper’s Kiss, and Vanity’s Brood, The Lady Penitent trilogy Sacrifice of the Widow, Storm of the Dead, and Ascendency of the Last, as well as book four of the War of the Spider Queen series Extinction, a short story in Halls of Stormweather with a follow-up novel Heirs of Prophecy.

The main plot of The Gilded Rune is the spreading of a Stoneplague through the dwarven race. The main character Torrin Ironstar is a human who feels he is a dwarf whom has been forged into the wrong body. Some subplots involved are Torrin’s quest to prove he is in fact a dwarf and the adversity he faces, his search for the Dwarf God Moardin’s soulforge which he aims to use a unique item he has acquired to transport him anywhere he wishes, and others that would lead to spoilers.

The pace of the novel is perfect. This one builds right from the beginning and brings the reader into the characters and what is going-on with everyone while providing adventures before even coming to the main plot of the story. I felt there was just never a dull moment as the novel progressed. The story flowed nicely along just taking the reader from one stage to the next and nothing really broke from it. The characters were easy to connect with. For me this is a realms novel that has been long in coming for enjoyment. It even takes me back to the old days of FR when the reader could catch glimpses of the gods and even see the stakes in which their immortality becomes threatened.

Some criticisms:

1. The only one that I can determine here is the lack of a real antagonist. While there is a real threat to the survival of the dwarfs, there is really no true villain to focus the reader’s dislike. Once it is finally revealed how everything was started and the reasons why, it felt like “oh, ok, they are to blame.” This however is a minor criticism and does not take away from the enjoyment of the story.

Some positives:

1. The characters are awesome with this one. They really drew out the emotions of the reader whether it was to sneer at their prejudices, celebrate their accomplishment, or morn with them during their loss.

2. Of all the books post spellplague, this is the one that should have come out first as it had woven the elements of pre and post spellplague events nicely. While there are still hints of what the spellplague had done to the realms, there was enough of an old time feel to the story to keep even the seasoned veteran of the realms engaged and enjoying the story.

This was a great realms novel. I really wish Ms. Smedman had more to offer the realms as she is a prime example of what is right in the realms when it comes to providing excellent storytelling. If you are new to the FR universe, then I can easily recommend this one. Heck to anyone wanting to read about the realms or fantasy in general, I highly recommend this story.

Genet as a Living Existential Hero

In this 625-page masterpiece of psychoanalysis of one of our most complex men, the renown Existentialist Philosopher, Play write and French man of letters, Jean Paul Sartre, has turned his erstwhile compatriot, Jean Genet into his own private existential living hero -- built-up from whole cloth through literal allegory.

Jean Genet's biography is as well known, as it is scandalous. To wit: from the age of 10 Genet, a bastard "ward of the French State," became a willing societal tool and incorrigible. He was, at various times in his life: a beggar, thief, homosexual, prostitute, deserter, escapee from both reform schools and prisons, and was eventually declared by the French government as a "habitual criminal." When it was discovered that he was not just a writer, but an extraordinarily good one, Sartre and other members of the French Literati, requested and got him pardoned from an automatically earned life sentence.

Genet, then of course proceeded to continue to live out the life of what he had accepted as his defined role in society, as a vagabond, deadbeat, homosexual and criminal. Even later in life, after he had become both a famous and a wealthy writer, he traveled, continued thieving, defended revolutionary causes and never quite stopped giving "the middle finger" to the society that had previously rejected him. But to this list he could now also added the persona of writer.

As the New York Times reviewer put it so elegantly at the time of the book's release: "of all the forbidden literary fruits, Jean Genet was always the darkest and most dangerous." In this book Sartre echoes that sentiment by describing Genet's books as "an epic of masturbation ... a matchless, unholy trinity of scatology, pornography and the legitimate study of evil."

Yet, it is precisely in his unwillingness to live out the hand dealt to him by French society, that Genet emerges in Sartre's eyes as the ultimate existential hero. Sartre maintains that, only "by [actually] doing evil, could [Genet] discover the evil that [French society] had told him, he possessed. In Sartre's eyes, Genet, born into a meaningless and hostile world, filled with guilt, fear, evil, and vacillation could only be free by eventually learning how to rebel against the society that had so carefully categorized him and then so profoundly rejected him.

Much of Genet's materials were excavations from his prison dreams. In these, the whole world is but one big brothel. Genet's autoerotic visions were always populated with characters right out of central casting from the deepest, darkest and most evil of pornographic movies. Yet it was from the depths of this moral black hole, it was through these characters and dreams, that Genet awoke to an entirely different and new reality: One in which he was no longer just a hapless prop for French society, but one that he could master as a free and independent human being.

He had discovered the reality of words. Genet no longer needed to justify his existence by "treading water" through an assigned persona in a world thrust upon him by French society, he could become a hero in his own reality. And so he did. All of his writings and plays became famous. Genet became a rich man, but he remained, until his death of cancer in 1983, a man of simple counter-cultural taste. Until the bitter end, he mocked the society that had rejected.

Of Sartre, Genet himself said in his 1964 Playboy interview, that "in a world where everyone is trying to be a respectful prostitute, its nice to meet someone who knows he's a bit whorish but doesn't want to be respectable." About this biography, in that same interview, he said that "It filled me with a kind of disgust, because I saw myself stripped naked--by someone other than myself. When I strip myself I manage not to get too damaged as I disguise myself with words, with attitudes, with certain choices, by means of certain magic. My first impulse was to burn the book. I was almost unable to continue writing. Sartre's book created a kind of void which made for [me] a kind of psychological deterioration.

The Archaeology of a Life: Genet Unmasked

The thing about Genet is that he (and his writings and plays) cannot be fully understood without the help of a disinterested interpreter. His life, his biography, and the very architecture of his being is simply too complex to be inferred indirectly simply from his writings, that is through his twisted dark and demonic autobiographical tracts alone. Oh, it is possible to stumble upon it in a fit of random brilliance, but even then one is very unlikely to get the whole picture. It takes Sartre to give us the full picture. And here he gives it to us with the force that only a kind of mathematical exactness of psychological analysis, can give. The kind that one finds in writing only rarely: like once in a lifetime. (Amen)

The "Rosetta Stone" to Genet's existence is of course the single overpowering fact that he is born a dual bastard, knowing neither his mother nor his father. He is a man without a human passport. His resume lacks a biography. His personal psychology has no social geography -- that is, it has no definable social limits or secure connections or "hooks" into everyday reality. He is adrift, and has no way to situate himself in the world psychologically or socially except indirectly thorough what he can infer indirectly from others and through his own introspection. Socially he is a blind man "up the proverbial creek" trying to find his way in a hostile world that believes his very existence is "owed to them." He is born "a ward of the state" and thus into a world in which he is obligated to those who hate him because of his unfortunate birth. His life, his body of literary works, his truancy in life, are simply Genet's way of "feeling his way around" in an alien reality. Like a social blind man, he feels his way around in unfamiliar and unwanted territory. He is a trespasser and a spectator in his own life, all he has to guide him is his internal truths that are created "on the fly" as he is thrust along in life.

Sartre declares him a Saint because the morality he carves out for himself is based on a kind of pristine innocence and truth that will not admit to "bad faith." He sees morality as a local bipolar tool to create psychological stability, if not some sense of self-defined equanimity. If one is honest enough (and Genet is), one can forge a black and white morality out of any kind of debris - even that leftover from a hostile society -- and use it to drive ones own stake into even alien moral ground. That is why for Genet, there is no contradiction between being a committed bible-reading Altar Boy and a skillful full time thief.

This is what Genet does. This is who he is. This is his what he has become through his own self-creation project. This is his own announcement to the world of his being. He finds his way out of, and back into, a complex psychological world that becomes a morass of his own choosing. Guided only by a fierce honesty to what he perceives to be his own existential being, Genet creates a world on the "backside" of normal social meaning. It is rich, has its own internal consistency and most of all, is true and authentic to who Genet sees himself to be. For Genet, (and ultimately for Sartre) there is no "bad faith" in Genet's existence.

Thus, Genet to Sartre is a Saint, most importantly because his existence is an authentic existence, lacking the baggage of "bad faith. It therefore is existentialism in its purest and most pristine form. For us, Sartre uses Genet's life and works to open up a window into the world of Existential Psychology in a way that only he and Genet can do. This is heady stuff. 1000 stars

Wonderful

Genet is a deeply misunderstood genius. Much of this arises from his rebellion against heterosexual convention. But his vision captures the contradictions in all our natures and, if you can separate yourself from your prejudices (which is virtually impossible), you will be able to see he beauty and truth in his works.

Sartre is one of the few in the world who could see this.

Russ Martin generates a world where evil manifests itself to catch the unwary and beautiful into a life of sexual and demonic slavery, while likewise tempting the hero with similar ploys. The ending leaves the reader wondering what the "devil" comes next. Martin's vivid imagination is unmatched by other writers.

About the Author
Before the publication of Small is Beautiful, his bestselling reappraisal of Western economic attitudes, DR. E. F. SCHUMACHER was already well known as an economist, journalist and progressive entrepreneur. Born in Germany, he first came to England in 1930 as a Rhodes Scholar to study economics at New College, Oxford. In later years, his advice on problems of rural development was sought by many overseas governments.

This book was published in 1973. The author, E.F. Schumacher , was ahead of his time as an environmentalist. The book is a collection of essays divided into four parts. It is not a typical econonics book filled with numbers, charts, graphs, and formulas. "Bigness is the nemesis of anarchism, whether the bigness is that of public or privat bureaucracies, because from bigness comes impersonality , insensitivity, and a lust to concentrate abstract power. Hence, Schumacher's title ' Small is Beautiful.'" He weaves together threads from Galbraith and Gandhi, capitalism and Buddhism, science and psychology.

Great resource

This book is written very, very clearly, hitting all the key points and making the topic of radiology as understandable as humanly possible. It doesn't go into ALL of the intense clinical diagnosis details of course. But if you want to really understand the concepts from atomic level interaction to xray production to clinical use and positioning this is a very good resource. It lays things out better than books like "Oral Radiology, principles and interpretations" that go into so much unnecessary detail that you end up not understanding the concepts that actually matter. Pretty short and concise and useful.

Jewish Background Helps Open Up the Gospels

The volume is subtitled, "Insights from His [Jesus] Jewish Context," and it lives up to its subtitle. Plenty of stimulating insights here.
David Bevin has collected and revised 22 articles he wrote for a "Jewish Roots" journal, The Jerusalem Perspective, and compiled them into a most interesting book.

The book is subdivided into four main heading, the first of which is "A Jewish Rabbi Name Jesus." This section includes articles about Jesus' formal education, the common practice of discipleship in first century Judaism, and the accuracy of Oral Tradition.

The second section is titled, "Jesus' First Century Jewish Context" and includes information about hems, tassels, Jewish prayers, and examples of rabbis who remained single until later in life.

The third section is titled, "New Light on Jesus' Teachings" and address Jesus' view of riches, pacifism, and divorce.

The fourth section is titled, "The Kingdom is Here" and addresses Jesus as the Messiah-Prophet, the requirements for gentile believers (Acts 15), and Paul's Olive Tree Analogy.

The positives of this book far outweigh the negatives. Just reading relevant portions from the Talmud, for example, amplifies many Biblical passages. The information about discipleship was especially enlightening. I never realized that there were several hundred other rabbis roaming throughout Israel with bands of disciples during the time of Christ. The Talmudic ruling that a man who was going to follow a rabbi for more than 30 days needed permission from his wife evidences how common discipleship was during that era.

The author frequently suggests that while many of Jesus' practices were main stream for that time, others - such as claiming to be Messiah and working miracle after miracle - were not!

The chapter about why Jesus did not get married is particularly relevant in the light of the popularity of the fictional "Da Vinci Code." The examples of famous rabbis who married later in life are helpful (even if a footnote suggests some assume Jesus was married because of the Bible's silence; such a viewpoint ignores the issue of offspring fathered by a man without a sin nature).

I do have some reservations with this material, however. Whereas many Christians have divorced Jesus from His Jewish context and present all of Jesus' teachings as original, this book (and some others) present too many of Jesus' teaching as not original at all. If one is determined to align all but a few of Jesus' teachings with those of the rabbis, an artificial template inhibits the true interpretation of Jesus' words. You make it fit because you think it is supposed to fit -- whether it really fits or not. The author also does not seem to give much creedance to the Gospel of John (as though it has no bearing on the synoptics).

Another example of where I disagree includes the author's belief that Jesus viewed the "heavy" and "light" commandments as bearing equal weight. Then what about Jesus' criticism toward those who strained at gnats and swallowed camels? If camels and gnats are the same thing, how is this possible? Or specks and logs?

The same might be said for Jesus' view toward the Oral Torah (rabbinic traditions). Although He did frequently follow much of the Oral Torah, He spoke against being obsessed with the traditions of men in contrast to the Word of God (and by the "Word of God" He meant the written Word, which He often quoted as such).

Although I do admit it is hermeneutically helpful to try to back-translate Jesus' words from Greek to Hebrew, those of us who believe in both inspiration and inerrancy might have trouble with some of the author's views regarding the composition of the Gospels. The author does not hold a low view of Scripture, just not as high a view as we who espouse verbal, plenary inspiration and inerrancy.

This is a short but worthwhile read. Most of the chapters run only 4 or 5 pages of text plus heavy (but sometimes interesting)footnotes. Because the information is so illuminating, 4 or 5 pages a chapter is satisfying.

This book contains a wealth of gems, despite a few stones among the jewels. With those cautions, I highly recommend this work to anyone who wants to seriously and diligently study the words and works of Jesus Christ. Great for pastors, professors, Bible teachers, but only selected laymen (at least for we who are conservative evangelicals or fundamentalists). The source materials here are especially helpful even if readers draw different conclusions than Bivin does. This is the sort of material I LOVE!

Very valuable insight

Yes, Jesus words must be understood in the context of His time, not perceptions as they have evolved now 2000 year later. My only reservation is that I wonder if Mr. Bivin is trying too hard to fit Jesus into the perspectives of His contemporaries. For instance, there is controversy over the original text of Matthew 19:17. Mr. Bivin uses this to connect "one good" with the Torah rather than with God. However, there is no similar controversy over the text of Luke 18:18 which clearly indicates God is the One good. Also earlier in Matthew 19 Jesus clearly labels Moses instruction on divorce as unacceptable. Of course that is part of Torah. It was unacceptable because it broke one of the Ten Commandments. Jesus generally upheld Torah, but not always.

Solid sruvey that illuminates some of Jesus's more "confusing" comments

This is one of those books you wish you had read a long time ago. David Bivin does an excellent job of "taking you there," back to the time of what it would be like to hear the words of Yeshua (Jesus) back in the second temple period. Bivin makes frequent use of rabbinical sources to help explain some of the more challenging aspects of the life of Yeshua. Although the text is nothing new per se, it draws from a vast pool of knowledge of great scholars such as David Flusser and Brad Young who make extensive use of ancient Jewish writings to shed light and provide context to the New Testament. For anyone not familiar with Jewish sources, Bivin is not suggesting that the Talmud is inspired as the Scripture, but that it contains important clues and commentary that shows that Yeshua was vary familiar with these texts. Many of Yeshua's words parallel those in the Talmud, as Bivin shows.

Bivin does a good job of explaining Jewish customs that affect our understanding of Yeshua. The opening chapters on discipleship, the life of a rabbi, and taking on a teacher's "yoke" are required reading for anyone who seeks a solid historical analysis of the background to the gospels. The section on the prayers of Yeshua is also very critical, but too short; you will definitely want to research this further after reading it. And the analysis on the famous Acts 15 passage is also quite insightful (although again not necessarily new, but quite clear and concise).

In all each section is pretty brief, easy to read, and answers a basic question such as "Why didn't Yeshua marry," or addresses a confusing point such as "Miracle on the Sea of Galilee." In fact, each chapter is basically a summary of articles that you can find on his website, entitled "Jerusalem Perspective."

David Bivin previously wrote a book, "Understanding the Difficult Words of Jesus." Although I kind of liked that book, I was very disappointed with it because Bivin didn't make the case for the Hebrew gospels (i.e., written in Hebrew) that well and the use of Jewish idioms didn't really help explain some of Jesus's difficult words. The selected verses weren't that impressive. This time around however, Bivin's choice of difficult words was impressive. This time he really picked some tough ones (such as divorce, pacifism, the rich young ruler) that often frustrate Christian commentators. Although he doesn't advance the case for the Hebrew gospels per se, you will feel that at the very least the gospel writers thought in Hebrew because so many things fit well when viewed Hebraically.

In all, this is a very useful book that I think Messianic believers will find fruitful. It would be helpful for those new to the Jewish background of the gospels. For those who have been around, I think you might find some of the references and the arguments pretty helpful, even if you already agree with the positions. Assuredly a great read for anyone who seeks better background knowledge to the gospels, and ultimately to get to know their Messiah a little better.

Described in the Qur’an (which gives a more detailed account than is found in Genesis) as ‘the most beautiful of stories’, the romance of Yusuf and Zulaikha is a theme to which eastern poets have constantly returned. Undoubtedly in Jami’s deeply moving, thought-provoking and highly entertaining version it finds its finest expression. Jami explores the intimate and many levelled relationship between love and beauty and portrays erotic and divine love, not as an implacable dichotomy, but as an allegorical continuum. This entirely new prose translation combines a faithful reflection of the spirit of the original with the compulsive readability of a novel.

The present digital edition is based, with some minor amendments, on the 1980 Octagon Press edition.

My sincere thanks go to Idries Shah – specifically for introducing me to Jami’s epic love-story – and in general for shedding so much light on Sufi thinking, both in its traditional and its current manifestations. If this new translation comes nearer than its western predecessors to rendering some of the kernel as opposed to the mere husk of the original, then the credit belongs to the clarifying and revitalising influence of Shah’s works.

In this tavern, where so many a sweet tale is sung, I cannot hear so much as an echo of this melody. My fellows have drunk their fill and gone, leaving nothing behind but their empty jars; I see no ripe one at this feast of the raw, who holds a cup of this wine in his hand. They have left us neither jug, nor cup, nor cupbearer: nothing but sorrow now remains.

But take heart, Jami: have done with diffidence! Whether it be lees or clearest wine, bring forth your drink!”

About the Author
Hakim Nuruddin Jami(1414-92 CE) lived most of his life in Herat and studied in close association with the Sufi Master Saaduddin Kashgari and (more remotely) Khwaja Ahrar, the supreme leader of the Naqshbandi Order. He was the author of about fifty works, including a collection of seven epic poems entitled haft awrang (Seven Thrones), of which Yusuf and Zulaikha is but one. (He wrote this masterpiece in his seventieth year, in 1483 – one year before Sandro Botticelli produced his Birth of Venus.) Jami also wrote nafahat al-‘uns (breaths of the breeze of friendship), a lengthy compendium of biographies of the Sufi Masters, and the beharistan (Abode of Spring), a collection of verse and teaching stories in the manner of Saadi’s gulistan. More details about this excellent man, whose manifest genius repelled some, but whose boundless compassion and humility captivated many, many more, are to be found in the Afterword of the present book.

Translator David Pendlebury has combined careers in language teaching, both in the UK and overseas with a lifelong interest in the ideas expressed so powerfully in Central Asia and the Middle East through the medium of poetry.

Written by the great Sufi poet in 1483 A.D., this masterpiece explores the intimate and many-leveled relationship between love and beauty and portrays erotic and divine love, not as irreconcilably opposite to each other, but as an allegorical continuum.

Judaic, Christian and Islamic versions exist--derived perhaps from an ancient Egyptian source--but none could replace Jami’s rendering. David Pendlebury’s prose translation reaches for the kernel, not merely the husk, of this allegory. But while it does so, there is also humor, excitement, romance and an abundance of insight into human behavior.

Pleasing translation of a Sufi classic love story

Pendlebury has taken a classical Persian poem and turned it into a highly readable novel. The poem is based on a story from Islamic folklore, which is itself based on the chapter about Joseph in the Quran. It takes off from the part of the story where the master's wife tries to seduce Joseph and tells "the story behind the story." Zulaikha is the name Islamic folklore gives to the master's wife (known as Potiphar's wife in the Bible). This Sufi classic humanizes her and makes us more sympathetic to her desire. I have used this book semester after semester in my courses on the literature of the Middle East. My students mostly find it delightful, after they get used to the way the Persian poet revels in piling metaphor upon metaphor, hyperbole upon hyperbole. I tell them not to expect realism; we are in the realm of the mythical here, where every maiden is a "moon-faced beauty" and every pair of pursed lips is "tight as a rosebud."

One of the best explorations into the mysteries of the divine. A truly excellent read, let down only in one place where the translator was obviously limited by the english language. A heart moving story for all generations.

Indelible Classic of Esoteric Spiritual Allegory

The translation betrays the era in which it was produced. However this is mostly an impediment to a modern reader's demands of a style, not a barrier to the meaning or understanding of this important classic. In the spiritual literature of Love, Jami is a master of the stature equal to the more popularly known Rumi. Like Attar, Jami renders a gnostic reality in allegory that yields sublime insight for the attuned reader. This is accessible through the medium of this present translation.
