Galatians (Anchor Bible), by James Louis Martyn

As its predecessors in the Anchor Bible series have done Galatians successfully makes available all the significant historical and linguistic knowledge which bears on the interpretation of this important New Testament book. A personal letter written by Paul in the mid-first century to friends in the churches emerging in the region of Galatia, where it was circulated, Galatians is down to earth and pragmatic. This biblical book requires the modern reader to take a seat in one of the Galatian congregations, to listen to Paul's letter with Galatian ears, and discern the contours of Paul's theology.

That is exactly what Dr. Martyn makes possible in his marvelous commentary, with its careful translation and creative interpretation of Galatians. Though relatively brief, Paul's letter is filled with complex theological and historical issues that demand a thorough treatment. Readers will not be disappointed in Dr. Martyn's sensitive handling of difficult passages, and all will be delighted to have a fresh translation that makes sense to our modern ears.

All in all, this volume will stand out as a shining example of top notch scholarship written for the general reader.

The gold standard
By Randy Travis
I ordered this along with many other references when preparing to teach a class on Galatians. The others were helpful and some were impressive but without doubt, this was by far the most objective, scholarly, and best researched volume of the ones I purchased. It is truly comprehensive in its coverage of Galatians as well as all related themes (contextual, societal, theological, politico/historical, philological). Every conceivable issue connected with the Galatian epistle and the theology of the Apostle Paul must have been addressed in this volume. Be advised that if one is looking for devotional reading or "spiritualization" of the text, this is not the volume for them. For those wanting an academic volume it is money well spent. I wonder if all Anchor Bible commentaries are this meticulously written?

Thorough, but verbose
By C. E. Ward III
The commentary on Galatians is one of the most complete, thorough writings I have read. The commentary covers every possible detail, even the most remote possibilities of interpretation, yet it is sound exegetically. There is some redundancy throughout making it a longer read than is necessary to convey the same thoroughness.

Worth Getting Because It Really Adds A Lot
By David A. Bielby
I'm a pastor who is working through Galatians for a sermon series. I'm also taking a grad class on Galatians right now, so I've been reading lots on this book...and studying the Greek text intensely. I heard from several people that Martyn's Galatians commentary was one of the best if not the best. I have to say I was surprised when I started reading it to see how fresh of a perspective he "brings to the table". For example, he starts off by viewing Galatians as if it were a drama. His explanations are memorable, poignant, and most important for pastors, preachable!

He also has more information available than most teachers or preachers need.

Let me illustrate: Jervis (NIBC Galatians) has a nice commentary with great comments throughout...150 pages. Martin Luther, FF Bruce, and R. Fung all have around 300 pages. Martyn's Anchor Commentary has over 600 pages on Galatians. On top of the additional information, he's relatively interesting to read because he says things differently than the rest and has fresh insight often. I have not read all of it, but what I have read it has been worth reading.

I heartily recommend this volume for everyone who is working through the text of Galatians. It's a great one! At the very top of the list in my opinion...right next to Fung's NICNT on Galatians.

The topic of lattice quantum spin systems is a fascinating and by now well established branch of theoretical physics. Based on a set of lectures, this book has a level of detail missing from others, and guides the reader through the fundamentals of the field.

From the Back Cover
The topic of lattice quantum spin systems is a fascinating and by now well-established branch of theoretical physics. However, many important questions remain to be answered. Their intrinsically quantum mechanical nature and the large (usually effectively infinite) number of spins in macroscopic materials often leads to unexpected or counter-intuitive results and insights. Spin systems are not only the basic models for a whole host of magnetic materials but they are also important as prototypical models of quantum systems. Low dimensional systems (as treated in this primer), in 2D and especially 1D, have been particularly fruitful because their simplicity has enabled exact solutions to be determined in many cases. These exact solutions contain many highly nontrivial features. This book was inspired by a set of lectures on quantum spin systems and it is set at a level of practical detail that is missing in other textbooks in the area. It will guide the reader through the foundations of the field. In particular, the solutions of the Heisenberg and XY models at zero temperature using the Bethe Ansatz and the Jordan-Wigner transformation are covered in some detail. The use of approximate methods, both theoretical and numerical, to tackle more advanced topics is considered. The final chapter describes some very recent applications of approximate methods in order to show some of the directions in which the study of these systems is currently developing.

Excellent, self-contained, concise intro quantum spin-chains
By Ramis Movasagh
An excellent and entirely self-contained introduction to the basis of quantum spin chains. It is a short and clear account and in my opinion is the best place to start. There are some minor typos (very few) but shouldn't come on your way and can easily be spotted. I would have hoped to see some discussions of entanglement. Nevertheless for those who like to be able to access the literature on spin chains and get to that point fast, it is a wonderful read.

Taking Off, by Ty F. Clemens

A few years after graduating college, Ty was fed up with "working" and "acting responsibly like every other adult is expected to," and chose instead to quit his job and backpack across Europe and Asia. Taking Off is the mostly true memoir of his trip.

Yes, this may come as a shock, but a twenty-something wrote about his experiences travelling. Kind of like when Ashley from HR sent you the link to her vacation blog. The differences being that this book is longer, has less pictures of Ashley in a bikini, and gives you no real obligation to read it since you'll never bump into Ty in the break room where he'll ask you how you liked it. But regardless of obligation, you can still appreciate this book, as it consists of several humorous, interesting, and worthwhile anecdotes that are way more interesting than anything that self-absorbed narcissist Ashley could ever write.

This book is completely, 100% free. So if you're interested, give it a read. If you like it, tell a friend about how good it was. If you don't like it, lie to an enemy about how good it was. Either way, make sure to flaunt the book's completion to someone. You're literate for God's sake, and the contemptible people with whom you surround yourself need to be made aware of your superiority.

Awesome Read!!

This was a funny, great insight to traveling without the pretentious dribble. Really was great fun to read about things you might not have realized about back packing through many countries and not just going for the typical tourist view.

It's not a work of art but enjoyable enough. Well written with much thought put into it. Enjoyed the way the different countries were explained just enough without it sounding like a history book.

Lots of 'laugh out loud' moments!
By bass player 61
A laugh-a-minute account of Ty's semi-aimless jaunt around the world. He quits his job, goes to Europe, and while there introduces the reader to the Europe that travel guides tend to ignore. After bouncing around the Continent for a while, he heads east, toward Southeast Asia, then backtracks to India. Great details are provided for each of his anecdotal adventures, as he encounters fellow backpackers and vagabonds, all sharing his desire to party all night (a/k/a "taking in the culture") at every stop along the way. I especially appreciated his descriptions of public transportation in each locale he visited. With his dry, self-effacing sense of humor and comical descriptions of certain aspects and customs of these foreign cultures, he had me laughing out loud countless times.

The Tragedy of Birlstone...
By HMS Warspite
"The Valley of Fear" is one of four Sherlock Holmes novels ably adapted to graphic novel format by Ian Edginton and I.N.J. Culbard. Conan Doyle's short novel introduces Holmes' greatest nemisis, the brillant crime boss Professor Moriarty, while challengng the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and faithful sidekick Doctor Watson to solve a mysterious death at the country manor house of Birlstone.

As the story opens, Scotland Yard Inspector McDonald consults Holmes on a horrible murder. John Douglas of Birlstone Manor has been horribly murdered by the blast of a sawn-off shotgun at close range. There is no apparent motive and it is unclear who might be responsible. Holmes and Watson travel to Birlstone to interview the witnesses and examine the crime scene. Holmes quickly detects a deception; his solution will astonish the local police, Scotland Yard, and the reader.

Edginton has adapted all the essentials of the original novel into a 124-page graphic format, while Culbard's simple but evocative artwork brings Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to life. As with two other of the novels, the story is presented in two parts, with Holmes and Watson solving a crime in the present, followed by an explanatory (and exciting) backstory to fill in the gaps. The backstory here concerns labor violence in a Pennsylvania coalfield, a gripping story in its own right. "The Valley of Fear" has been neglected in adaptions of Conan Doyle's stories to other mediums; Edginton and Culbard are to be congratulated for their nice job here. Highly recommended to Sherlock Holmes fans and to their children who need an introduction to the world famous detective.

A well-drawn Holmes
By Don Lee
Edginton and Culbert continue their faithful visual translations of The Great Detective's novel-length adventures, their pictures adding weight to (and substituting for when necessary, as should happen in a good visual retelling of a prose piece) Conan Doyle's verbal imagery.
One of Sherlock Holmes' lesser-known (at least among the general readership who do not count themselves Baker Street Irregulars, the Trekkies of Holmesiana) adventures gets a compelling retelling in the hands of these two British artists.
Though there's still a bit more of the tell than show, one can excuse that by the need to appeal to the legions of Sherlock Holmes fans, for whom there is no substitute for the Literary Agent's words.
Though the characters are drawn with simple lines to the point of abstractions, they are nonetheless expressive, and crucial elements of the story are told in the subtle expressions of a character in the background. Even the "visual double act" (the artists' words) of the guest detectives, "Mister Mac" and Mr. White Mason, show subtleties and layers of expression
Not to say the major characters get short shrift artistically. Their faces are drawn rich in expression and each is given a distince personality. Holmes is arrogantly masterful, Watson is affably long-suffering (and I thank Messrs. Edginton and Culbert for depicting Watson as vigorous and intelligent in the mold of Burke or Hardwicke or even Jude Law, not the stuffy buffoon that Nigel Bruce still lodges in many minds after all these years).
Though it's not mentioned in the notes, I can't help but think the look of the central figure, the American Douglas, was based on how a certain iconically American actor looked at about the time he shifted from playing rough, tough cowboys to playing successful ranchers who used to be rough, tough cowboys. Good choice, really.
Now what I really would like to see is this pair tackle the short stories. Any of them, really; there are wonderful visuals to be had in
"The Dancing Men" or "Black Peter" or "Norwood Builder," just to name a few off the top of my head -- and wouldn't you like to see E. and C. tackle the "Final Problem-Empty House" pair of stories? I would. More please, sirs.

I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. I have read almost every single mystery involving Holmes many times. I knew the story going into the book, but I still loved this graphic novel. I thought Edginton and Culbard did a wonderful job in recreating this story and I have read it a few times since receiving it. Well done, sirs.

From the Inside Flap
"You’re right. You’re a Kerrigan. I’m a McCloud. But this is business. If I think your horse is trainable, I’ll sign the contract."

"Excellent." Rachel’s mouth curved in a spontaneous smile of relief and she leaned forward to hold out her hand.

Luke took her hand in his. The combined impact of her smile and the feel of her slim fingers engulfed in his sent a jolt of lust to his groin and a strange longing coursing through his veins. She waited a moment, as if expecting him to say more. When he didn’t, she nodded before she turned and walked away.

Luke’s gaze followed her, the slight sway of her hips, the faint swing of her dark hair against her shoulders as she crossed the room.

She’s going to be trouble. He knew it in his gut.

The Cowboy and the Lady
By A. Mosa
Luke's Proposal is part Hatfield and McCoy, part Romeo and Juliet and 100% enjoyable. A fast paced, fun story, you cheer for Rachel and Luke from the minute he looks up and sees her enter the cowboy bar where he's drinking. Lois Dyer gives the reader a wonderfully well drawn picture of these two people, you feel you'd know them anywhere. She keeps the hero and heroine credible and interesting. This is part of the McClouds of Montana series. The landscape of Montana comes alive through the eyes of Luke and Rachel. I can't wait for more Kerrigans and McClouds to come together after generations of acrimony.

This Romeo on the Ranch is totally hot
By Lynnette Baughman
Sliding into the story of "Luke's Proposal" was like sliding into a hot tub when snowflakes are falling all around. Fire and ice! Luke and Rachel practically pulse with sexual attraction, but they have darn good reasons to resist each other. What keeps them apart is that delicious old plot device-- a family feud. What pushes Rachel to approach Luke with her business proposal is a strange requirement in her grandfather's will. I'm eager to read the coming "McClouds of Montana" books.

Quite a ebook! Avery interesting and attention grabber!
By Angela
I liked the suspense and action that was there at times to really keeps the reader who liked this filthy language from one or two of his main characters. And it seemed to have taken a along, long time to get there. WOW! I found it to be just too full of bad language and taking God's name in vain,etC. I really do not care to read this author's ebook again, sorry Joseph but you turned me away from ever reading books like yours. Because you did have a way to keep the reader reading it till the end with some some suspense but yet used way too much profanity later in your ebook this is why I am giving this ebook only four stars.
I definitely would only recommend this ebook for adults who do not mind reading this type of reading. I received this ebook for free and in exchange I have written as honest a review as I can.
