A great reference tool for formulas, tables, weights, dimensions, and a few example problems of design. I use the book daily just for the reference and I'm always finding something new in it. Would only be useful to someone in the piping industry involved on a constant basis with piping and pressure vessels.

About the Author

Meyya Meyyappan is the chief scientist for exploration technology at the Center for Nanotechnology, NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. Until June 2006, he served as the director of the Center for Nanotechnology as well as a senior scientist. He is a founding member of the Interagency Working Group on Nanotechnology (IWGN) established by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The IWGN is responsible for putting together the National Nanotechnology Initiative. Dr. Meyyappan has authored or coauthored more than 190 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has made over 200 invited/keynote/plenary talks on subjects related to nanotechnology across the world. His research interests include carbon nanotubes and various inorganic nanowires, their growth and characterization, and application development in chemicals and biosensors, instrumentation, electronics, and optoelectronics. Dr. Meyyappan is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Electrochemical Society (ECS), the AVS, the Materials Research Society, and the California Council of Science and Technology. In addition, he is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is the IEEE Nanotechnology Council Distinguished Lecturer on Nanotechnology, IEEE Electron Devices Society Distinguished Lecturer, and ASME’s Distinguished Lecturer on Nanotechnology (2004–2006). He served as the president of the IEEE’s Nanotechnology Council in 2006–2007. Dr. Meyappan has received numerous awards including a Presidential Meritorious Award; NASA’s Outstanding Leadership Medal; the Arthur Flemming Award given by the Arthur Flemming Foundation and the George Washington University; the 2008 IEEE Judith Resnick Award; the IEEE-USA Harry Diamond Award; and the AIChE Nanoscale Science and Engineering Forum Award for his contributions and leadership in nanotechnology. He was inducted into the Silicon Valley Engineering Council Hall of Fame in February 2009 for his sustained contributions to nanotechnology. He has received the Outstanding Recognition Award from the NASA Office of Education; the Engineer of the Year Award (2004) by the San Francisco Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA); and the IEEE-EDS Education Award and IEEE Educational Activities Board Meritorious Award for Continuing Education for his contributions to the field of education.

Mahendra K. Sunkara is currently a professor of chemical engineering and the founding director of the Institute for Advanced Materials and Renewable Energy (IAM-RE (http://www.louisville.edu/iamre) at University of Louisville. Dr. Sunkara received his B. Tech. degree in Chemical Engineering from Andhra University (Waltair, Andhra Pradesh, India) in 1986 and M.S., Ph. D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson University (Potsdam, New York, USA) in 1988 and Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio, USA) in 1993, respectively. He worked at Faraday Technology, Inc. in Dayton, Ohio from 1993 to 1996 as a project engineer and served as the technical leader/principal investigator on several SBIR research grants dealing with electrochemical technologies for environmental remediation and corrosion sensing and mitigation. Since joining University of Louisville in 1996 as an assistant professor, he received external research contracts in excess of $10 million to support a research program and to establish an Institute for Advanced Materials and Renewable Energy at the school. His research interests and projects include renewable energy technologies such as solar cells, Li Ion batteries, production of hydrogen from water and process development for growing large crystals of diamond, gallium nitride and bulk quantities of nanowires, processes for a set of novel carbon morphologies discovered within his group. He has published over 100 articles in refereed journals and proceedings, four book chapters and was awarded seven U.S. patents along with several additional U.S. patent applications pending. Several national and international news articles appeared on his research work in the area of nanoscale materials and their applications in to Li Ion batteries and sensors, etc. In the last seven years, Dr. Sunkara delivered more than 40 invited and keynote lectures in Germany, the U.S., Taiwan, Slovenia and India. Three of his research articles appeared on the covers of prestigious journals, Advanced Materials and Advanced Functional Materials. He is the founding organizer of an annual statewide workshop on the theme of Materials Nanotechnology (KYNANOMAT) held since 2002. He was awarded the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty in Engineering award in 1999 and was the first recipient of the prestigious CAREER grant in Speed School from the National Science Foundation in 1999. In 2002, the Louisville Magazine placed him in the list of top 25 young guns in the city of Louisville. In 2009, he received the 2009 University of Louisville’s President’s distinguished faculty award for research.

great, but some shipping problemns

Book is good, very clear explanation/review of nanowires, good for someone with some knowledge of chemistry, but you don't have to know anything about nanowires. Shipped on time, but some of the corners of the book were bent when received.

Master of the Soap Box

Shortly after reading this book, I was able to stand on a street corner and address a multitude of people as they passed by me. I was able to lecture for hours on the coming of the apocalypse. I knew I was able to clearly get through to people as some actually glanced at me on their way by. It could have been my tinfoil hat or the socks I have not washed since July, but I would like to attribute it to this wonderful work of literature that helped me master public speaking.

Disappointing

I'd considered buying this book from Amazon, and decided to first examine a copy at the Boston Public Library. I was unimpressed. The tone seems aimed at middle-school students, and the text is littered with patronizing "Dick & Jane" anecdotes. A quick glance through the table of contents suggests that Grice and Skinner address nearly every conceivable aspect of public speaking -- but a closer examination reveals a complete lack of depth. It seems as if they simply brainstormed ways to add pages without actually investigating their subject.

The most derelict example I found was the second chapter, devoted entirely to a discussion of ethics. This chapter includes a section on plagiarism, where Grice and Skinner define plagiarism and warn students that getting caught may result in failing a class or being expelled from school -- hardly the sort of information you'd expect from a college-level textbook. Meanwhile, Grice and Skinner lazily sidestep the most challenging issue -- the employment of speechwriters -- by confining its mention to a brief, rhetorical question among the chapter-end exercises. In other words: "Here's a complex issue. We've exhausted our space with rudimentary ones, but we encourage you to do some real work on your own!"

There are some informative, useful books on public speaking. Richard Dowis and James Humes have each written excellent books on crafting and delivering a speech. Virgil Anderson and Ann Utterback have written valuable books on training your voice, and Livingston Taylor and Keith Johnstone have written classics on stage performance. My suggestion is to skip this book. I was thoroughly disappointed with its lack of ambition, and I'd hate to be stuck with a professor who found it respectable.

The book is very informative. It has cheatsheets printed on the back cover. There is also information to help you with your first speech because the author realized that speeches would be prepared before the student could finish reading the book.

It also pays homage to the patterns they used on their well loved House of Cards. The Eameses brought a sense of humor and joy to everything they created, and the design and layout of the book aims to convey that spirit in a visual feast for the eyes.

It is a testament to the Eameses and the lasting value of good design that their Eames lounge chair, created in 1956, endures today as perhaps the most recognizable and coveted piece of mid century furniture design. Their experiments in technological innovations, like molded plywood and fiberglass, resulted in such classic pieces as the bent plywood LCW and DCM Chairs, the Molded Plastic Chairs, and the Aluminum Group; all of which are still in production by Herman Miller.

Likewise, Charles and Ray designed and built their own home in 1949 in Pacific Palisades, and it is still revered as a landmark of modern architecture. Built as part of the Case Study program in California, sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, it was one of the earliest experiments in pre fab construction, using off the shelf industrial parts. But unlike the austerity of much of modern architectural design, their factory like shell was lovingly lived in along with their personal collections of folk art, treasures from their travels, and everyday objects refreshingly displayed with affection and without pretense.

In exhibition design as well, ""Mathematica: A World of Numbers ... and Beyond, 1961,"" for IBM is considered groundbreaking as an interactive, educational, and experiential way to communicate the wonder and magic of math. Similarly, their seminal film, Powers of Ten, 1977, expresses the mathematical concept of multiplying to the tenth power, in a very direct, simple, and powerful way.
Unlike any other book previously published on Charles and Ray Eames, this unique monograph is a visual celebration of their work and life, and was created in true collaboration with Charles’s grandson, Eames Demetrios, and other members of the Eames family.

BEAUTIFUL WORK OF ART

Bought this book as an early Christmas present for myself, and I absolutely love it. Not only is the box it comes in gorgeous, but the entire book is amazing. I love flipping through to learn more about Charles and Ray Eames. This would make a great gift for anyone who loves design, architecture, etc!

WOW - FINALLY, AN AMAZING BOOK ON EAMES!

What an awesome book on Charles and Ray Eames!
First of all, it is HUGE in size and has a really awesome colored slipcase and high quality construction.
Inside, the book offers a really comprehensive look at the life of Charles and Ray with many pictures I have never seen.
The writing is all by Charles and Ray - or various members of the Eames family - so it is also the first "official" book by the Eames Office and family. Quite a lovely tribute and now has a great spot on my coffee table!
I would highly recommend it as the ultimate EAMES book!

Beautiful Book / Stunning Object

This was our second attempt at getting a Great book on Eames design and it's a fantastic one that feels definitive. The images are gorgeous and the writing is insightful and balanced well within the book. The slipcase is an object of beauty itself: vibrant and glossy beautifying whatever space you place it in. The best book I've found on Eames' history and works.

About the Author
For the past two decades, Cecie Starr has been known as one of the best-selling biology textbook authors. Her texts, appreciated for their clarity in both the written word and the visual representation of biological concepts, include multiple editions of BIOLOGY: THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF LIFE, BIOLOGY: CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIONS, and BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW. Her original dream was to become an architect. Instead of building houses, she now builds, with care and attention to detail, incredible texts based on this philosophy: "I invite students into a chapter through an intriguing story. Once inside, they get the great windows that biologists construct on the world of life. Biology is not just another house. It is a conceptual mansion. I hope to do it justice."

Ralph Taggart, Former Chair of Biological Sciences at Michigan State University, Ralph Taggert is now the chair of Geological Sciences. Professor Taggart, known for his outstanding research in Paleobotany, has taught the general biology course for over 20 years.

Christine Evers has been creating multimedia and Web-based materials to supplement Starr and other science texts for ten years. She earned her B.S. in Biology from SUNY Stony Brook. After working as a research assistant studying the developmental biology of slime mold, she was awarded an N.S.F. fellowship to attend Yale, where she studied evolutionary biology and honeybee behavior. She has a strong interest in science education and serves as a member of her local school board.

Lisa Starr earned her B.A. in Chemistry/Biochemistry from the University of California at San Diego Revelle College in 1982. Over the next five years, she became expert in molecular and cell biology as she helped build a veterinary virology research program at the startup biotech firm Syntro (which was later spun off into Protein Polymer Technologies). During this time, Lisa invented the cDNA cloning kit and the mRNA isolation kit that launched Invitrogen (now part of Life Technologies). She left Syntro to launch a molecular biology division for a veterinary vaccine company (Synbiotics, later acquired by Pfizer Animal Health), and then spent seven years at The Scripps Research Institute investigating integrin isoform expression in development and cancer metastasis and training postdoctoral candidates. She was recruited to start up the biotech firm Ixsys/Applied Molecular Evolution (later acquired by Lilly) and to establish proof-of-concept for combinatorial library construction as well as antibody randomization/humanization at the fledgling firm. Prior to joining the Starr franchise, she was recruited to start up Desmos, another biotech firm, that was later spun off into Cythera/Novocell/ViaCyte. Since 1997, Lisa has been responsible for the incredible art in the Starr biology textbooks, and began authoring the books in 2004.

Worst texbook I've ever used

This book may be fine for an 18-19 year old kid who just had high school biology a couple of years ago, but for those of us who haven't had a science class in 10+ years it's borderline useless. Each chapter opens as if it is aimed at a grade school level audience, only to switch gears after four pages and diving into complex descriptions of chemical reactions, yet failing completely to explain or define many important points.
A fine example of this shortcoming can be seen in chapter 6 which deals with photosynthisis. The reader is introduced to NADP+ and NADPH, yet there is no definition of of what either are and it's not very clear as to what exactly they do. A simple web search, however, results in a succinct answer to both what they are and what they do.
I feel that for the price of this book (your first born child, plus an arm and a leg) that it should be more thorough and clear in its explanations.
