The "Apocalypse" of Narnia

The world of Narnia is coming to an end. A false Aslan is abroad in the land, and the people (and beasts) struggle to follow what they think is the truth. Eustace and Jill, from The Silver Chair, are sent to Narnia to help the last king of that land rally his troops for the final battle.

This is the apocalyptic volume of The Chronicles of Narnia. If The Magician's Nephew speaks of a creation reminiscent of the book of Genesis, this book speaks of an end reminiscent of that foretold in the book of Revelation. Here, everything comes to an end, and the entire purpose of the existence of Narnia is finally explained by Aslan. The Christian references are unmistakable. Aslan, like the Biblical Christ in Revelation, triumphantly comes to bring an end to his world and save his people. Most of the material in this book is very Christian-like, all the way down to the separating of the creatures on the right and left hands of Aslan.

This, the final volume of the Chronicles, brings everything to a head. This book provides the so-called meaning of life, and gives validity and value to all of the good deeds the children have been trying to do since the first book. Here, the good have their reward. The descriptions in this book (especially the end) are absolutely beautiful, and the finale is nothing short of moving. Lewis, a master of Christian apology, succeeds here in bringing to life the Christian concept of the end of the world, and of the final rewards of the just. No part of the Chronicles of Narnia would be complete without the vision afforded by this, the final book.

Voyaging

The second volume of the Narnia Chronicles closed with the possibility of Lucy and Edmund -- though not their older siblings -- returning to Narnia. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" makes good on that story, with the intrepid pair (plus a whiny cousin) returning on a strange sea voyage.

After the events of "Prince Caspian," Lucy and Edmund are sent off to stay with their obnoxious cousin Eustace. But when they admire a picture of a strange ship, suddenly all three kids are sucked in -- and land in a Narnian sea. On board the ship is King Caspian, now fully grown, who is determined to find a bunch of knights exiled by his murderous uncle, even if he has to go to the edge of the world (literally).

Lucy and Edmund are thrilled to be back in Narnia again, but Eustance proceeds to make trouble any way he can, complaining and causing trouble among the crew. But there are problems more horrifying than any of them can guess, from dragons to sinister "gold water" to a region filled with their worst nightmares.

"The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is one of Lewis's most original and tightly-written Narnian adventures. It's also a bit of a break from form. After two books of battles against evil tyrants, "Voyage" simply goes where no man/woman/mouse has gone before, and gives us a view of the Narnian world as more than one isolated little region.

And in some ways, it's also the darkest Chronicle. Lewis explores the theme of greed here -- greed for power, beauty, money and magic -- and has some scenes both chilling and majestic. But his archly humorous style peeks through in several places, whether it's pompous mouse Reepicheep or tea with a reclusive old wizard.

Edmund and Lucy are their usual plucky selves, albeit a bit more mature than before. But "Voyage" also introduces one of Lewis' most interesting characters in Eustace Clarence Scrubb. Like Edmund, Eustace is initially a peevish, lying boy who generally makes trouble, but slowly learns his errors. But unlike Edmund, Eustace doesn't have to ally himself to the baddie to learn that.

"Voyage of the Dawn Treader" was a turning point for the Narnia Chronicles, as well as the one that began venturing into darker territory. Engaging and tightly written.

questing after the Kingdom

I have put off reviewing "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" for a long time. There is no other book I have so longed to recommend to others, but I have felt (and still feel) totally inadequate when it comes to expressing what a wonderful story this is. I could go on for days about all the wonderful things contained here. That said, I will try and focus on only a few aspects of this book and then plead with you to read it.
First, I must note that I feel this story should be read in the context of the entire Narnian series. It stands on its own nicely enough, but the deep background of the previous tales adds richness and texture to the tale.
Secondly, I must note that this book is highly enjoyable because it works on two levels. The tale as a whole is the story of a journey into unknown lands. With each new place they visit, the whole is broken into wonderful episodes. My favorite episode (with the exception of the ending) is the island where dreams come true...its not what one would expect.
The character of Eustace is my favorite of all the humans in the Narnian books. This story is partly a tale of his transformation. This seems to be a universal human desire; but Eustace, like all who truly seek transformation must, finds impossible to reform himself. This is an especially timely lesson for our "self-help" culture at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
This brings me to what I like best of "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." Let me preface what I say here by making it clear that no one hates heavy-handed use of allegory as much as I do. However, the allegory that is "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is one of the greatest things of beauty I have ever encountered.
In one form or another we are all questing after an unseen kingdom. Be it the kingdom of God, Materialism, or simply of the Self--we are all, like Caspian and his pals, on a quest. I don't wish to give away any endings, but let me just say that the greatest truth Lewis expresses in his book is that no one can reach the True Kingdom on their own.
I urge you to read this book. If I could only have a handful of books, this one would definitely be among them. I give "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" my highest recommendation.

The anatomy drawings are very good -- and again serve as a good reference for other courses. I like the artwork depicting infectious disease and immunizations and illness in general that are the book. Sometimes these are the things a student will remember!" -- "Thus length does matter. Too much information leads to overwhelming students as much as too little information stupefies them. Interesting text on microbiology, fun to learn.

I utilized this text for my microbiology class in undergrad. It lists the major parasites, molds and bacteria. Parasites were the most interesting because it shows you what foods are associated with what parasite. Pretty gross stuff but was not boring at all. I also used:

Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Question and Answers, isbn 0971999635, to help me with test preparation. The questions were quite similar to what I found on my college microbiology tests. Both books helped me to achieve very good scores on my tests.

The text in this book is fantastic, very clear and concise - easy for a student (like me) to read on their own and get a very clear understanding of. The book covers everything from the discovery of microorganisms to viruses, bacteria, protazoa, prions and the chemistry in cellular metabolism.

So you can see, this book covers a variety of topics - and is a fantastic introduction to the field of microbiology. The negatives of using this book - if you are a visual learner the diagrams are sub-par at best. Now I'm not talking about the tables, the tables are fantastic. The diagrams are minimal, and not very helpful. I am lucky in that my Micro professor has overheads of the diagrams from a different book that he uses.

Classic Module

Dungeon magazine ranked this among the thirty greatest DnD adventures of all time, so I decided to purchase a copy and run it for my group. I have been very impressed by the quality of the storyline in the module -- the UK division of TSR did an absolutely fantastic job. I highly recommend this for anyone who is interested in some old school gaming.

Great module from the golden years of D & D

This AD & D module is for character levels 1-3. The setting is the "haunted" house that sits high on a cliff overlooking the fishing town of Saltmarsh. Ghostly happenings and mysterious lights appearing from the house have kept people away from the house for many years. But the house really isn't "haunted" - instead, it is made to APPEAR that it's haunted by smugglers who are operating from the house and have tried to scare people away (sounds kinda like a Scooby Doo mystery). This module has a good story, illustrations, and above all a steady level of dread. It's not incredibly hard to figure out the "secret" of Saltmarsh. The second part of the module has to do with seizing the smugglers' vessel. Thinking and tactfulness are essential. This adventure is one of my personal favorites from the early '80s. I won't reveal too much, I'll just say that it's a great two-part adventure through a "haunted" house and its cellar with lots of twists and turns and surprises. I think you'll enjoy going through this module if you enjoy the old school Dungeons & Dragons of yesteryear. What I'm referring to is the way the game was in the '70s and early '80s - the golden age of Dungeons & Dragons. That period of time had the best modules and the game's popularity was at its peak. I highly recommend this module (if you can obtain a copy).

Sinister Secret Of Saltmarsh

In the very early 1980s, contemporary D&D modules typically troubled themselves with story lines only long enough to get you underground; once you were in the dungeon, you slogged through hours of room-to-room combat and hidden pitfalls. The only thinking required was "How do I kill this thing?" Sure that was fun for a while, but this adventure illustrated that our gaming brethren in the UK were taking D&D to a more sophisticated level. This is definitely a thinking player's (and DM's) adventure with clues to be digested and a plot to be figured out; it gets high marks for innovation.

That said, the adventure is actually somewhat lacking in many ways. Yes, it lays out a plot with a twist or two, but the secret is not really very sinister, or even that well concealed. The "dungeon" portion of the adventure, including encounter descriptions, maps, and NPCs are uninspired and the designers really left far too much up to the DM. What you get are reminders that the DM will have to develop so-and-so NPCs and encounters or come up with this-or-that villain strategy just when you're hoping that they'll give you something meaty to dig your creativity into. It seems to be a lot to lay on a person who spent $6.50 of their hard-earned paper route money to play this adventure back in 1982; especially considering that at least 4 pages of this module were wasted on full page illustrations and useless visual aids. Still, if the DM is willing and able to flesh this thing out, it should lead to one of the better D&D experiences from that era.

Dr. Jay E. Adams is Director of Advanced Studies and Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, California. He received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University, his B.D. from the Reformed Episcopal Theological Seminary, his S.T.M. from Temple University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. In addition to having served as a pastor and then a Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Dr. Adams has been the Dean of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation, Laverock, Pennsylvania, since its founding in the early 1970s. He has written over fifty books, translated the New Testament into English (The Christian Counselor’s New Testament), and lectured throughout the world. His books deal with many aspects of pastoral ministry and counseling as well as Bible study and practical Christian living

The best book for it's size

If you're divorced, know someone who is divorced, or even might think you could someday meet someone who is divorced, and think (as I did) that you already knew this issue, read this book and think again! This is a concise book. The text itself is only about 100 pages in medium print -- a breeze of a read. One of the most outstanding things about this book is that it not only presents the author's viewpoint, but also addresses and dismantles the claims and assertions of most opposing viewpoints. He goes verse by verse, in whole context, and not this "single verse theology" or Scripture hop-scotch that so often flows from the anti-remarriage crowd. He does this with great research from a variety of other authors (all Christians of course), including historical as well as Greek and Hebrew language background information. Tons of footnotes and references are included. There are even some issues he addresses that I didn't see addressed many other places, such as:
* How some divorce people are permitted to get remarried, but aren't allowed to do so in the church sanctuary like first-timers;
* How polygamy is proved to have existed in Paul's time, especially among the Jews and Christian converts, and the effect that has on Biblical interpretation;
* Remarriage of the so-called "guilty" party (and he debunks that term) after a divorce;
* how the church has failed to shepard married couples, and the confusion thereby brought about;
I could go on and on, but you get the idea. The few negative reviews I see are mostly from those who obviously have NOT read the book, as they attribute ideas and concepts that are not actually in the book. [The one negative review here on Amazon was obviously from someone who didn't like what Adams had to say, but chose to malign the book rather than address the evidence and presentation.] Again, the evidence, presentation, and clear "bulletproof" logic and theology in this book are phenomenal. Many of the deeper concepts of true forgiveness and restoration in Christ are very convicting to read in light of how we think of other sinners -- and ourselves.
Fair Warning: This is not a "get a divorce, it's easy and God doesn't mind" book. He's very clear that all divorced results from sin. Period. Whether it's adultery (sin), someone divorcing for unbiblical reasons (sin), or even an unsaved divorcing a Christian (sin on the part of the unbeliever), it's all because of sin. You will not find the "marital euthanasia" garbage that says you can walk out because you're irritated. Remember, this man is an early founder of modern Bible-based Christian counseling. But he's also a pastor and extremely knowledgeable theologian, and it shows.
By the way, if you and an even more exhaustive study on the issue, I recommend "Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible: The Social and Literary Context" by David Instone-Brewer. It's three times the size, and even more "deep." This book by Adams is a WONDERFUL gift to someone stuggling after divorce.

A must-have for any software engineer, game industry or not

This book WILL give you:
- An excellent introduction to good software design and how to think about design issues.
- A great background in the notion of software design "patterns."
- An exploration of some key categories of problem that come up in software, and especially in games.
- A VERY detailed exploration of 19 concrete software patterns that are particularly useful in the hairiest parts of game programming.

This book will NOT:
- Teach you how to program.
- Give you specifics of working with a particular library, language, game engine, or platform.
- Give you a 100% complete architectural blueprint for your next game.

This book is a gem, and should certainly be considered required reading for any new industry or hobbyist software engineer, regardless of whether they work on games.

"Game Programming Patterns" delivers, providing an in-depth look at the core engineering patterns used ubiquitously in games but seldom known outside of the games industry. However, at its core, Game Programming Patterns is about much more than games. I find it to be one of the most accessible and most complete books on Software Design in general. The thorough examination of trade-offs and design decisions makes it a fantastic introduction to "good design" for any programmer. I HIGHLY recommend this, especially to new-ish programmers starting off in their first job (again, regardless of whether or not they work on games).

A must read for all novice-intermediately skilled programmers

This book was extremely enlightening not just for programming games, but as an introduction to the many different areas that are important to understand when implementing a game. For example, before reading this book the idea of implementing a virtual machine to read byte code was very intimidating to me, but the author laid out the basic ideas in such a clear and easy to follow way that I've actually been able to try my hand at it with a good amount of success.

This was not an isolated experience. As I read this book, yes I was reading about making games, but that was really just an example problem that was used to teach concepts that are useful in many different situations.

Highly recommended.

A Software Architecture Masterpiece

Computer game engines can be massive and monstrously complex pieces of software consisting of millions of lines of code comprising systems including rendering, physics, artificial intelligence and more. Poor design decisions can make the game engine code a pain to interact with. This book doesn't describe how to design a particular system or game engine but instead describes how to use programming patterns to organize game engine code so that systems are decoupled, fast, and easily maintained.

What's remarkable about this book is that it takes on such a complex topic and delivers it in a simple, vivid, and humorous way. The concrete examples, gorgeous diagrams, and entertaining text make reading a pleasant experience instead of feeling like study.

Each chapter describes a single pattern, explains what it can be used for, gives sample code for how to implement it, and details considerations that should be made by a designer when deciding if the pattern should be used in their engine. These chapters are self contained so that a developer can dive into the particular patterns they are interested in without having them read anything earlier in the book.

A reader will need basic knowledge of object-oriented programming in a C-like language. Although the code is written in C++, anyone writing in C# or Java should have no problem applying the patterns to their own engines. However, two of the twenty chapters of the book describe patterns that use manual memory management to increase game engine performance.

Despite the patterns being used to address problems encountered in game engine design, most of the patterns described are also applicable to problems in numerous domains of programming. This makes the book a solid software architecture book in its own right, illuminating ideas unknown to even the most veteran programmers of a variety of disciplines.

I've read this book a couple of times and I still feel there's more I can learn from it. I've told colleagues about it and have only ever received positive feedback. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in software architecture. Moreover, I believe that it should be considered required reading for anyone working on computer games.

About the Author
Frederick J Gravetter is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at The College at Brockport, State University of New York. While teaching at Brockport, he specialized in statistics, research design, and cognitive psychology. Dr. Gravetter received his Bachelor's degree in mathematics from M.I.T. and his Ph.D. in psychology from Duke University. In addition to publishing several research articles, Dr. Gravetter is co-author of the best-selling STATISTICS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, 10th Edition, ESSENTIALS OF STATISTICS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, 9th Edition, and RESEARCH METHODS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, 5th Edition.

Larry B. Wallnau is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at The College at Brockport, State University of New York. The recipient of grants and awards in both research and teaching, Dr. Wallnau has published numerous research articles primarily on the effect of psychotropic drugs. With Frederick J Gravetter, he has co-authored previous editions of STATISTICS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, now in its tenth edition, and ESSENTIALS OF STATISTICS FOR THE BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, now in its ninth edition.

Simple to read but huge errors

I have generally struggled with math classes, especially statistics, but this book was fairly easy to read.

The reason I rated two stars? There are some horrible typos and editing errors that completely change the formulas and make some of the problems unsolvable. The worst were in Chapter 14. I'll list them below for anyone else that has to use this book:

On page 497, in the formulas given for the A x B interaction for SS, the formula given is incorrect. The correct formula is on page 481.

The formula given on page 497 is: SSaxb = SSbetween treatments - SSa x SSb

The formula given on page 481 is: SSaxb = SSbetween treatments - SSa - SSb

For the problems of Chapter 14, Problem 10 on page 500 is completely unsolvable. Both N and G are wrong (Should be 30 and 210 instead of 40 and 120, respectively) but BESIDES that there must be some other error since after correcting those the problem was still unsolvable.

All of those errors were confirmed by my instructor.

Unbound book Paper too thin for a binder

I like the fact that it was less expensive. However the pages are so thin that when I placed the three hole punched papers into a binder, they tore easily. I didn't realize for $150 the book was not bound.

I do not mind that it was necessary to put the book in a binder, I just wish the paper was of better quality.

The best written statistics text I have ever used.

This text is user friendly, contains lots of useful examples and led me to a much better understanding of statistics. It may lack a few descriptions of some stats test procedures, but that is minor when compared to the simplicity and readability and the constant updating that has led to a book of this caliber.
