Practicing the craft....

Generally, I collect ceramics, I don't make them anymore. I was never very adept with the potting wheel where my projects too often became lost in space, but I used to make very nice ceramics. In the process of dabbling with molds, slip and glaze I wondered about other aspects of the craft and over the years I have read and studied the subject informally. This wonderful book is a valuable resource whether you are starting out and want to experiment with different clay projects or want to refresh your memory.
Zakin first explains the building blocks--ceramics-making materials (different combinations lead to different outcomes). He discusses types of clays, feldspars, frits, silica, and other modifying compounds. Ever notice when you hold a cup made from Kaolin (frequently called porcelain) filled with a hot fluid you don't burn your hand whereas the cute cup you bought at the local craft show made from a more porous clay does? Zakin provides a great deal of information about the attributes of clay including plasticity, durability, color, maturity absorption, texture, resistance to warping, and intended use. If you're making a mug, a quiche pan, or a vase (or buying one), you may want to consider these aspects.
Zakin provides the reader with much information about ceramic color, glazes, and mold-making (plenty of tips for success). I was fascinated with the sections discussing glaze making and testing, and kiln loading and firing including some nice photos of the raku process. Section 16 includes a succinct history of ceramics that covers various types generated over the ages (nicely illustrated and clearly written).
The appendices of the book continue the in-depth exploration of the process of ceramics making including ways to analyze your results. This is an informative and well illustrated book containing many examples of ceramics made by the author and other artists working in his field.

This book has a wonderful overview of ceramics for the studio potter. It has wealth of useful information for all skill levels and is one of the best reference books that I have in my collection. Top artists in the field are represented with lots of pictures and glaze recipes. Very well written and easy to understand.

Philip Yancey realized that despite a lifetime attending Sunday school topped off by a Bible college education, he really had no idea who Jesus was. In fact, he found himself further and further removed from the person of Jesus, distracted instead by flannel-graph figures and intellectual inspection. He determined to use his journalistic talents to approach Jesus, in the context of time, within the framework of history.

In The Jesus I Never Knew, Yancey explores the life of Jesus, as he explains, "'from below,' to grasp as best I can what it must have been like to observe in person the extraordinary events unfolding in Galilee and Judea" as Jesus traveled and taught. Yancey examines three fundamental questions: who Jesus was, why he came, and what he left behind. Step by step, scene by scene, Yancey probes the culture into which Jesus was born and grew to adulthood; his character and mission; his teachings and miracles; his legacy--not just as history has told it, but as he himself intended it to be.

Yancey is not alone in his examination of the "real" Jesus. If you're going to read one book about Jesus, make it the Bible. If you're going to read two, this is my suggestion for the second. A serious attempt to dig into the person of Jesus, both divine and historical, working from the Biblical stories up rather than from our current theology down, Yancey's book tackles everything from Jesus' Jewish roots to the Beatitudes ("lucky are the unlucky"), citing Christian fiction, Christian scholars, and secular historians, but always bringing it back to the Biblical foundation of Christianity. Well worth it for Christians wanting to deepen their relationship and understanding of Jesus, and I suspect helpful for outsiders looking for an interpretation whose only agenda is, "Who is this man, really?"

Inviting and Thought-Provoking

I read this book at a point when I was really struggling with my faith: believing it, living it, and owning it. Yancy's writing style, which invites questions, was a really safe place for me to go during that time. It allowed me to be honest about both my faith and my speculation. So the first thing I appreciate about the book is it's honest, straight-forward exploration of Jesus' life. Secondly, I just thought that Yancy brought up a ton of ideas/points that I had never thought of. I really enjoyed this book, and in many ways I feel that it saved my faith, because it helped me really grow and own my faith.

Extremely Interesting!

This is an extremely interesting book that has good court cases and essays that talk about the ethical and legal ramifications of genetics. It is very well organized and has good notes and questions at the end of every section. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in the effects of Genetics on modern day life!

This book is a very easy way to begin delving into the topic. I thought they did a fantastic job of summarizing the relevant biology before delving into the cases. I also appreciated that, for the most part, they don't waste your time with cases and are good at pulling out the relevant information.

Superb guide, very complete

Well, you can't really do Nepal without Armington's book. I went on a trek with Stan in my younger days (nearly 40 years ago!) and he became a life-long friend. So, when my son and his army buddies wanted to do a trek, I bought him this book (which he read), as my first-edition copy was long since out of date, and put him in touch with Stan. He was impressed by both. Stan arranged their trek to Annapurna, and put them up at his house on their way. Everything went well. Stan's a great guy, loves Nepal (his adopted country), and knows all there is that's worth knowing. You can't go wrong.

Here's another book to get in addition to L.P. Nepal

This book is great! I like to travel and not be a "typical american", and this book really helped me in that effort of knowing the culture and the land. I spent 5 weeks in Nepal and was more educated about the country/traditions/culture than any tourist I ran into. I spent a week in Kathmandu, 3 weeks trekking the Annapurna Circuit, and 1 week kayaking the Seti River. I used the medical section of this book (almost everyone gets sick), but should have bought a little medical book available in the bookstores in Kathmandu. Also, the trekking information in this book is good, but it's not great. If you want the BEST guidbook for trekking the Annapurna Circuit or Everest, then go to yetizone.you know what. It's a good site and the webmaster publishes his own guidebook for cheap! It's the best darn guidebook out there without question. Everyone I ran into in Nepal that looked at my book, and I mean EVERYONE, wanted to buy it or make copies. Also, it's not really a book, it's more like a little spiral bound pamphlet, so it weighs practically nothing, and I could keep it easily accessible in my cargo pocket.

I looked at some other guidebooks, specifically, the one by Stephen Bezruchka. He is a doctor, and it shows in his guidbook. He has the best medical section of all the guidebooks, and between his and the Lonely Planet one, I learned A LOT. If I had to choose one book to take with me (weight is an issue when trekking), I'd choose the Lonely Planet, along with the guidbook from yetizone.

Great travel advice, as usual for Lonely Planet

I bought this book to prepare for my trip to Nepal. I found the advice in the book regarding cultural mores and appropriate behavior to be invaluable. The descriptions of places, restaurants, and hotels was accurate. I would have liked to see longer lists of accommodations. One thing I learned in Nepal is there are many, many more hotels than this book describes.

Here's why I gave it a 4: if you are over 40, go out and buy reading glasses before purchasing this book. The font size is very small and difficult to read for those of us with older eyes, especially in the dim light of an airplane or a Nepal Hotel Room.

I love these books, my 3 year old seems to love them too. These books were around since I was a little girl. Really amazing books. They were used but in very good condition. I saw a few crayon marks inside of one or 2 so far but nothing major. We have only read about 6 out of the 29 so far.

Worth its weight in gold.

As a designer of CNC machine tools and robots for the last 35 years,
technical data concerning steel properties, has been one of the most
important subjects involved in all my design projects.

When the "ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF STEELS" came out in the 80's I acquired an edition, and found it to be a lifesaver, enabling me to
evaluate steel alternatives to obtain optimum design.

The handbook has been in constant use over the years, and I have
recently bought a new 8th edition.

I strongly recommend this handbook as a must for design engineers who
are constantly in a dilemna as to which steels are optimum for specific
parts and what properties can be obtained, so that the engineer can
fully specify the optimum steel type and all properties necessary.

Falls short of expectations

Short on details and fundamentals. Even as an overview (which is its intent) it doesn't really reach that aim - providing only a cursory 'coverage'. This book was supposed to have been written as part of the Introductory course into Actuarial Studies at The University of Melbourne (Economics Dept) - it falls short in providing students with a sound grounding in the basics. Given its cost, it was a disappointment. However, a nice aspect of the book is the fact that it provided solutions.

Great story!

I love stories about dogs and how they can teach us about unconditional love. I loved the ending most of all. However, a word of caution is necessary. I cried during some of it. It's just amazing how much we can learn about life from dogs if we would just open our hearts and our minds to it.
