Helpful but not that helpful

This book is suppose to do a number of things according to its covers:
1. "Illuminates the Two Initial sections of the GMAT"
2. "Teaches Effective Strategies for the New IR Section."
3. "Enables Optimal Performance on the Argument Essay"
4*. This book is also "Updated for The Official Guide for GMAT Review 13th Edition"
(*I am sure some of you are wondering why #4 is relevant. I will get to that point in a bit.)
5. "Includes 6 Free Online Exams"

To rate this book, I will explain whether this book delivers the above 5 promises on the cover.

IR section:

Long story short, this book does indeed provides comprehensive overview of IR section.
So item #1 on the cover is true.
At first, I thought it was organized little bit weird because this book breaks down the problem types into two types (IR quant and IR verbal) instead of the actual problem types (table, graphs, etc).
However, this approach works and helped me understand what these problems are about.

On the flip side, I didn't feel that the "strategy" in the book was very good.
Below is the strategy of the book:
1. Understand the prompt
2. Understand the question
3. Plan your approach
4. Solve the problem
I mean, come on. I don't need to buy a book to know this "4 step approach".
I was hoping to get some tips on how to get through the problem quickly because I kept running out of time during practice test.
This book didn't really help in that regard.
So item #2 was not true for me.

Essay section:

Again, this book provides comprehensive overview of essay section as it did for IR section.
So item #1 on the cover is true.

It also gives you insight on how essays are graded and how you can improve your essay score.
This really helped me figure out the right writing style to use for essay section.
Essay section is not like Verbal and Quant section where you can check the score after taking a practice test.
There is really no way to know how well you are doing with Essay section unless you buy the essay grading software from MBA.com.
I was rather nervous about essay section but this book provided some good insight and that was very helpful.
So I would say item #3 on the cover is true.

Now, do you remember item #4 on the cover?
4*. This book is also "Updated for The Official Guide for GMAT Review 13th Edition"
When you read through the essay section of this book, this book basically advertises "The Official Guide for GMAT Review 13th Edition". It literally tells you to go to Chapter 11 of "The Official Guide for GMAT Review 13th Edition".
Why the hell do I need to buy another book to use this book? Why isn't this book a standalone product?
I wouldn't say this is a bait-and-switch but it is kind of like a bait-and-switch.
So item #4 on the cover is true but in a bad way.

Misc:

Now to one of the best part of this book, item #5 on the cover.
5. "Includes 6 Free Online Exams"

When studying for GMAT, I realized that it is very important to build mental stamina, to familiarize myself with the GMAT problems and to train myself to work under time pressure.
When I was studying, I did as many practice exams as possible.
Manhattan GMAT website provides 6 practice tests (1 free + 5 paid) that are invaluable to test takers.
I found these tests rather difficult but it was really helpful because the actual GMAT was easy compared to the practice test.
Also, note that this book is much cheaper than the full version of the book but provides the same access to practice tests.

In conclusion, I gave this book 3 start because it only delivers 3 out 5 promises on the cover.

1. "Illuminates the Two Initial sections of the GMAT" - Good. This book provides comprehensive over view of IR and essay sections.
2. "Teaches Effective Strategies for the New IR Section." - Bad. Strategy in this book is basically pointing out the obvious and was not helpful
3. "Enables Optimal Performance on the Argument Essay" - Good. Explains how essays are graded and how to improve the score.
4*. This book is also "Updated for The Official Guide for GMAT Review 13th Edition" - Bad. This book basically advertises the full version of the book.
5. "Includes 6 Free Online Exams" - Good. Extra practice test for cheaper price.

So-so resource

I was really disappointed in this book. It barely tells you any strategies for the questions other than read the question and use the skills you learned from quant and verbal. And there are no practice problems, just a few examples. There are some practice essay prompts, but they basically tell you if English is your first language and you write well you don't need to worry about the essay because most B-schools won't even read essays that score a 4 or better. The only good thing about purchasing this book was access to the "six" practice exams. I put six in quotation marks because one of the free tests is available to everyone without buying anything, and I had already taken it before buying this book. It is not a full exam and does not include IR or essay practice. So really you get 5 full length practice exams by buying something from Manhattan. HOWEVER if you buy any of the other Manhattan books you also get these tests- they only have 5 tests total available with the same questions no matter how many books you buy. I am glad I have access to more practice tests but this is a really weak resource. If you want a much better explanation of IR with strategies for the section, targeted strategies for each question type and lots of practice problems check out Cracking the New GMAT 2013. I got it from my library for free.

It is a good book, but a little too pricey for me due to delivery cost.

The good thing is that the book actually relaxes you about the IR section. Shows you how to look beyond the questions. Some of the strategies are helpful and when I started reading them I actually developed some on my own. There isn't much to practice on in the book but they do give you a special code in the end page for 6 full-length computer adaptive exams which are very useful considering how hard it is to find full exams. But what the book did for me is that it taught me how to overcome the panic and annoyance with the IR questions. I actually started to enjoy them and appreciate their trickiness. The Writing Strategy Section was ok, it points out the things that you should bear in mind to get a high grade. In general, I am very happy with the Manhattan books, they have helped a lot! Especially with Math so I would recommend them all, including this one.

I think this is Mark's best book thusfar.Ive read a few of his other books,they were good,but this 1 was really good.It was a deep powerful story.And would be an excellent read for teens going into the young adult stage.

Oh, so that's what happened to Joey Bishop

Mr. Starr should be complemented for taking the time to write a book about a comedian that has been long forgotten. I would have preferred a longer book but perhaps Mr. Starr was afraid of being redundant. One reason that the book is not longer, I assume, is that Joey's career does not really lend itself to a study of a body of work.

Joey--when he was at his best--had the ability to snap a very witty one-liner. However, while not stated in Mr. Starr's book--I believe that Joey's real downfall was the laziness he exhibited on his late-night talk show. He never really took the time to do a monologue or prepare any post-monologue comedy bit. Instead, he let Regis share the opening spot with him and then he went right to his guests. That would never sell today and it didn't sell in the sixties.

Mr. Starr takes the time to indicate how Joey was unbearable to much of his staff, somewhat reminiscent of various accounts of how Eddie Cantor treated his radio staff. But Joey and Eddie do share one extremely admirable trait--a dedication to charitable causes (as set forth by Mr. Starr) and for that alone, Joey deserves our respect.

Incidentally, Mr. Starr's recounting of one Joey Bishop joke about the Texan who goes to Israel is one that I'll be telling people for a while.

Readable book about a marginal entertainer

Ask anyone under 45 about Joey Bishop, and the response you'll get will be "Who?" Michael Seth Starr aims to change that, although you'll be wondering by the end of the book why he bothers. Bishop was, at best, a marginal figure in the annals of American entertainment. During the 60's, he somehow managed to share the stage with superstars like Frank, Dean and Sammy despite having none of their charisma. And although Starr often describes him as the "top comedian of the 1960's," he also has to admit that Johnny Carson thrashed him in the late-night ratings, and Bishop's early 1960's sitcom was an utter flop.
Still, the book is readable. Bishop comes off as a hard-working, but demanding comic, with few friends. I hope he truly got good audience response in the 60's, because the lines quoted in this book fall flat on the printed page. I guess you had to be there. Starr is a good writer....perhaps he will choose a more intriguing subject for his next bio.

Denigrating and Skimpy Bio of Famed Comedian

Joey Bishop was the least-known of the Rat Pack and became the last of the group to have a biography written about him with this demeaning book. It is written tabloid-style by a writer who appears to go out of his way to denigrate his subject.

The book is way too short--less than 180 pages of material including photos (the last 50 pages list his TV episodes and movies)--and skips through Bishop's career with few details. This isn't a deep, insightful look at the man's personal life or his work. Instead it's rehashed clippings from magazines like TV Guide. So it's just a peripheral overview of the subject. Bishop deserves better.

In the final pages the writer reveals why the book is filled with so much negativity--Bishop wouldn't cooperate with him on it and in his one face-to-face meeting with the star, the author felt verbally attacked. Okay, so Joey was hot-headed with co-workers and as he aged got grouchy. There are dozens of similar stories of rich Hollywood celebrities that are the same. For some reason this book seems to only emphasize the negative aspects of Bishop's life (except for a couple token mentions of Joey's charity work, such as going deep into Vietnam to visit soldiers--and even that gets dissed!).

You certainly don't come away understanding the subject any better. There's only a passing mention of Bishop's wife and son. There are almost no first-person accounts by people involved with Joey. Instead it is quotes from magazines, lengthy quotes from Rat Pack routines and excerpts from Regis Philbin's book that mentions his time with Bishop. And there are numerous small factual errors and mixing up of dates.

Since the book is the only source on the subject, it's worth reading if you are extremely interested in Joey. But be prepared to be disappointed.

Needs MAJOR updates...

I chose this rating for one simple reason: The frequencies are COMPLETELY out of date; and several new commuter rail "agencies" and light rail operations have surfaced. Mr, Sturm; if you are still alive, PLEASE, update this book! Two examples of new commuter projects in my local area (D/FW) are the Trinity Rail Express (TRE), and the light rail/city bus "agency" called Dallas Area Rapid Transit (or DART for short.) Now I will admit that some of your information MAY still be accurate; and that the TRE is actually run as a joint venture between DART and the Fort Worth Public Transportation System; (or, as it's more commonly known, the T) but all the same; their addition is needed!

Railroad Radio

I bought this to listen to train crews. It has been helpful but I wish it had a guide to how and when rail workers use the radio. I know this would change from railroad company to company, but it would be helpful. It is a good frequency guide.

About the Author
Dick Dorworth has skied and climbed in Europe, Asia, Alaska and South America; but he’s spent most of his life in the mountains of the West. He ski raced extensively from 1950 through 1965 and set the world record for speed on skis in Portillo, Chile in 1963. Dick taught and coached skiing for years, served as coach of the U.S. Ski Men’s Team. and later Director of the Aspen Mountain Ski School. Dorworth’s writing has appeared in Ski, Skiing, Powder, Snow Country, Mountain Gazette, Men’s Journal, Climbing, New West, Mariah, Wild Duck Review, Summit, and Backpacker. Dorworth is a reporter and regular columnist for the Idaho Mountain Express in Ketchum, his home base. Most winter days he skis, either on his favorite mountain, Baldy, or in the backcountry. In summer he climbs. He is a registered Democrat who thinks his party needs more calcium in its diet. Although a member of the Sierra Club, he thinks Deep Ecology is closer to the mark. Night Driving, Dorworth’s first book was published in 2007 by First Ascent Press.

Meh Cool Stories Written Irritatingly

I remember reading Dorworth in ski magazines when I was a kid. I see he hasn't grown up and still is a verbose liberal elite who nags us for being successful. It's a trade off reading his cool skiing stories versus his progressive interjections.

This is the third book of Dick Dorworth's I have read. He is a wonderful writer and I totally got into every book. They're about skiing, yes, but there's also philosophy, nature and humor incorporated in every one.
