Author of The Friends of Eddie Coyle and many other books, and professor of creative writing (he calls it "spoiling the paper"), Higgins here develops his insights into the psychology of authorship and the essentials of good writing. Creative writing, he feels, draws on a need to tell stories ("all fiction is gossip") so obsessive that even mundane difficulties or the specter of rejection fail to stop the flow. Because reading fine writers promotes good writing, he suggests many apt titles and includes, from writers such as Dickens, Thurber, Hemingway, and others, passages that exhibit mastery of elements that daunt beginners, such as mood and dialog. Concerned less with mere sales than with quality work, this book is recommended as a stimulating blend of literary essay and good advice.

A helpful book

Well written and good advice for the aspiring writer.He uses ext extnsive quotes from good writers to illustrate his points. I found that helpful and incidentally this led me to some new works.

The Friends of George V

You can get this book for a penny (+3.99 S&H, so 4 bucks). Here are the reasons this book is worth four bucks: Higgins is funny. His advice will make you laugh and probably break your ego a bit. I don't know how relevant this advice is in this day and age, but I think much of it still has value. `Here is what editors want, here's what you should do if you want to get published' is the basic premise. This isn't to say that Higgins has no integrity--he has plenty. He very much believes in his definitions of "good" writing and "bad" writing, and he makes a strong case for Papa-style and against Thomas Wolfe-style.
Another reason this book is worth four bucks is that it's darn near an anthology. Higgins quotes much great material--including the first chapter of Farewell to Arms, an entire John O'Hara story, a big chunk of Gay Talese's wonderful "Silent Season of the Hero" about an aged Joe DiMaggio (still pining for Marilyn, of course), Irwin Shaw, and some more great stuff. You might be introduced to some really great writing that has been forgotten (or at least I never hear about Talese, etc, these days). How did the publisher get permission to print all this? Was it expensive?
So, to recap: you get fun, funny advice and killer excerpts. It's worth four bucks. You should also read The Friends of Eddie Coyle because it is the greatest book in the world.

Only the Truth from George V.

Read it because you love George V. Higgins: or read it because you really want to learn about writing fiction. He's not going to tell you it's easy, 'cause it isn't. But if you just have to do it, like he did, then this shows you the light at the end of the tunnel, and how to get there.
