Fort Anderson was the largest interior fortification guarding Wilmington, NC, the Confederacy's most important city by late 1864. Beginning in March 1862, Confederate engineers built massive earthen batteries mounting large seacoast cannons at Brunswick Point, the site of the colonial port town of Brunswick, located halfway between Wilmington and the mouth of the river. In February 1865, Union forces advanced on Wilmington by way of Fort Anderson. General Grant had ordered them to capture the city in order to assist General Sherman's Carolinas Campaign. A combined operation against Fort Anderson lasted from Feb. 17-19, 1865. The fate of the Confederacy hung in the balance.

Buy and read before you visit Fort Anderson!!!!

Several years ago when Dr. Fonvielle’s first account of Fort Anderson (Fort Anderson: Battle for Wilmington, 1999) rolled off the presses I thought “Well, this should be the final word on the subject.” so well presented was his account. Gladly, I was wrong! In the years since the author, the preeminent scholar of the Civil War in the Lower Cape Fear, has uncovered more facts, stories and lore about this fascinating site and its connection with the fall of Wilmington in February 1865. As Fort Fisher had been neglected by Civil War historians for decades Fort Anderson’s story was sadly even more so. To fully understand the significance of Fort Anderson one needs a thorough overview of its connection with the abandoned colonial town of Brunswick, its strategic position in the Confederate defense system of the Lower Cape Fear, and the military personalities in both armies who crossed paths and swords at this locale in the closing weeks of the war. The author does all of this and does it superbly!
Any Civil War historian could give an account of Fort Anderson but no one, and I mean NO ONE, could do it with the fervent interest Dr. Fonvielle has for his subject. His half-century long passion and enthusiasm for the topic is evident on each and every page. Fort Anderson is somewhat seen as the ‘red headed stepchild’ of Fort Fisher but this latest account finally allows this fortification to stand upon its own merits.
As with Dr. Fonvielle’s previous accounts this volume is presented in a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing manner in type that is a delight for us older readers and lavishly illustrated so that the reader can literally visualize being at Fort Anderson in the smoke, fire and chaos that hastened the fall of the city of Wilmington in February 1865- which sealed the fate of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.
If you have never visited Fort Anderson- buy the book, read it and then visit the excellently preserved earthworks and you will understand why this historic site is one of the jewels in the crown of the Lower Cape Fear.

A Wonderful History of the Lower Cape Fear

Dr. Fonvielle has created another wonderful history of the Lower Cape Fear Area. His Foundation and History of the Fort Anderson area in the early 1700s sets the stage of need for additional defense for the Port of Wilmington. The original photographs and maps along with later created maps with high degree of description are a great asset to this book. In my opinion this History could only be told by a person such as the Author who grew up near the Fort's area and has studied and researched it his entire life. As a History Buff, I like to visit and stand on a Historical Site and with the Story and Images put myself into the Notable Times. The present day images and maps along with war time ones within allow me and any visitor to do just that. I highly recommend this book to all levels of Historians. I give it a Five Star Rating, it deserves much higher.

Wilmington's Civil War History

The author has practically produced a brand new work, in what originally started out as an update for the older publication "Fort Anderson: The Battle for Wilmington" This book is substantial..... in size, depth and story. Again, Dr. Fonvielle and NC Starburst Press have teamed up to produce another beautiful volume, full of period images, modern photography, artifacts, and incredible maps detailing just about every improvement ever made to the fortress during its wartime construction. The fort was always being added to and improved, just like the author has done to his book. The fascinating history of the riverside location is detailed from start to finish. What began as a colonial port town, its sacking by the Spanish, abandonment, new life as a Confederate earthen fort, to it's ultimate and hopefully final transformation into State Historic Site, Fort Anderson/Brunswick Town finally has a complete history in written form. Fort Anderson guarded the back door to Wilmington, NC and until recent times, has been ignored in the written word. Fonvielle is an excellent technical researcher, fishing and digging for details in all places and has the dual gift of being able to write these facts and figures into a form that suits both the casual reader and the Civil War historian wanting every particular.
The author has done a monumental job tracking down images of people, soldiers, and others that have left their footprints at the fort. I would have to guess that most of these have never been published.
The book itself is a true treasure and a beautiful work. Visually appealing and well put together with many nice touches. Another keeper on my bookshelf!
